Technically seen a KMP can be built even for vanilla. We don't provide the vanilla-kmp as default, just because vanilla is vanilla.

With dkms, you wouldn't have to provide separate things at all. One package works for all kernels.
Basically that's same for KMP; it just a matter of configuration you may set in the spec file (or the rpm macro provided in the project). Admittedly DKMS has many advantages, yes.
