Hi,
can we get rid of this one, please.
Further cleanups could be: - Make i386 default a preemptive smp kernel (similar to what -desktop is right now). - Get rid of the current -desktop flavor
No 64 bit capable platform should be run with an i386 based kernel. If really necessary, people should run a 32 bit environment on top of a 64 bit kernel.
Tell that to my proprietary hardware drivers that the company making the hardware and drivers no longer exists...
Thus we may even be able to remove PAE support to enforce this. Only use case I see for i386 kernels are (non-pae, 32 bit only) Atom boards or old, not 64-bit capable desktops/laptops where you typically want to run a -desktop flavor. On old i386 servers where PAE made sense, you better run a 10.1 or older openSUSE dist...
F YOU! There are completely large expensive xeon servers that are i686 32bit only that need to use more than 3.5G ram and are far from needing to be replaced.
I wonder what the current i386 kernel policy is: - default (smp, non-preemptive, no pae) - pae (smp, non-preemptive, pae) - desktop (smp, preemptive, pae)
Do -default and -desktop only exist for compatibility? Only needed flavor should be: - default (smp, preemptive, no pae)
Desktop kernel scheduling is wrong for servers.
What do you think?
