It fails allready in very early stage ( not more then about ten lines of messages without any messages concerning block devices) with "cannot execute /init". So I think, the kernel cannot setup the initrd, but the file initrd-2.6.27-HEAD_20081010035644-default and the right entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst exist and I would expect another error message , if grub wasn't able to load that file into memory.
