I am in situation where I have servers that do not use the SLES 9 stock and vetted kernel, they use a later 2.6 kernel from kernel.org. The server exhibits behavior of instability when booting because the kernel crashes mysteriously and there are ext3 boot-up errors as well. Keep in mind this is a production environment that someone put into jeopardy by compiling a pristine kernel without knowing all the facts of what was needed by the OS and it applications.
That doesn't sound very bright :)
I just would like to know who else practices this in a production environment. And why??
Lots of other companies do, but they have the smarts to do it correctly. One well publicised example would be E-Trade, and I know of many, many more that also do this, reving the kernel themselves to support new hardware, leaving the userspace libraries alone. But note that when you do this you loose support from your distro vendor. These companies have no problems with that, as either they support it themselves (and do so very well, it isn't that hard), or they pay others for support (IBM Global services will support anything for a fee.)
