It turned out it was not apm=off that was the needed workaround, but
nosmp.
I filed a bug about this in Feb: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=919836
I performed a hardware repair yesterday, and the boot panics remain only in 13.2, and only for 32 bit. 13.1 and TW both are working normally without nosmp in both 32 and 64 bit.
Suggestions welcome for how to figure out what kernel problem arrived post-3.12.44 and was resolved by 4.1.6, remaining for 13.2, but not a problem in TW.
I would use git to clone the mainline kernel source and bisect between v3.16 (bad) and v3.12 (good). Your problems of crash on boot should be a lot easier to locate than something that happens intermittently after 6 or 8 hours.
