Now, what I think you are saying is that the "LABEL=..." syntax was valid in grub, and now it doesn't work - is that it?
That I was, but it turns out my OP assumed all cmdlines in the sample had used that syntax. The one with the error hadn't, and has since been corrected. What happened there was omitted cleanup after doing some disk maintenance that involved changing some volume labels, facilitated by temporarily setting some cmdlines to device names.
