While the underlying reason is unclear to me, the symptom at least is being fixed by commit 27b2a49a ("Makefile: fix extra parenthesis typo when CC_STACKPROTECTOR_REGULAR is enabled"). Yet I think we should aim at addressing the root problem rather than papering over it with that fix.
