Hi,
It seems tumbleweed does not (normally) use a pure upstream kernel, as kernel-default includes patches. Although, is kernel-vanilla pure upstream like it sounds (albeit maybe compiled with custom options)?
Mostly. On the top of upstream patches.kernel.org/*, it contains few patches to package the kernel properly. All those in patches.rpmify/: https://github.com/openSUSE/kernel-source/tree/stable/ -- js suse labs
