I think it make sense for openSUSE to be close to upstream and given that we have not had any reports since we disabled this, this can be safely dropped.

Agreed, I think dropping this might have visible impact on performance for users. I think we would need this change but perhaps without kernel changes as suggested by Jeff. So, I plan not drop this until we have a replacement solution in place.
