It is not just a PAEd kernel, but also allows for a higher number of CPUs. That is the "big" in bigsmp.
Yes, but we want to install the "bigsmp" kernel even on small systems if they have PAE (due to no-execute protection in the page tables). And then, everybody complains "I don't have a big SMP machine". Therefore, "pae" is the better name. And no, maintaining 3 kernels is not an option for us.
