[Bug 1230007] New: [Possibly firmware bug] openSUSE Tumbleweed doesen't boot properly after 20240830 snapshot
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1230007 Bug ID: 1230007 Summary: [Possibly firmware bug] openSUSE Tumbleweed doesen't boot properly after 20240830 snapshot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: egor.kuznetsov.26@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Target Milestone: --- Found By: --- Blocker: --- Summary: After possibly update to 20240830 my system doesen't boot properly. After update I normally load to GRUB, but after choosing openSUSE to boot, I see HALF of motherboard logo and half of loading circle, boot into black screen and after sometime displays power off cause no signal. After rollbacking to 20240829 all seems ok. I see, that new snapshot update kernel-firmware and found something interesting in logs. Seems, problem in firmware update? I research DRM AMD bugzilla and found this: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3595 And seems thats it. DMCUB updates forvarious AMDGPU ASICs at 26.08 and then after update linux-firmware to 20240826 version GPU crashed. Looks like something in firmware now. As people says, 6800XT also crashed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

After updating from 20240823 to 20240830: Only the left half of the UEFI/motherboard logo is visible upon boot. When KDE Plasma loads, only the left half of the logo is visible for a split second, and then the other half appears. Then auto login to the desktop. All looks fine for about 10 seconds, and then the screen goes black. Then the screen alternates every few seconds between a solid gray and no signal. After about 30 seconds, I get one final no signal, and then it stays that way. After the above happened, I tried switching to a textmode terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F3, but no change. I also tried Magic SysRq combos K/R/O (IDK if these work in modern Tumbleweed), no change. The issue persisted after several reboots, but I was able to get back on my feet by rolling back to the pre-update snapshot. Here are my system details: Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor Memory: 94.2 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Manufacturer: ASUS And I My laptop boots fine, but after a suspend/resume cycle (by closing/opening the lid), the screen is black. Here are my system specs: # System Details Report --- ## Report details - **Date generated:** 2024-09-03 00:15:48 ## Hardware Information: - **Hardware Model:** Framework Laptop 13 _AMD Ryzen 7040Series_ - **Memory:** 8.0 GiB - **Processor:** AMD Ryzen™ 5 7640U w/ Radeon™ 760M Graphics × 12 - **Graphics:** AMD Radeon™ 760M - **Disk Capacity:** 500.1 ## Software Information: - **Firmware Version:** 03.05 - **OS Name:** openSUSE Tumbleweed - **OS Build:** (null) - **OS Type:** 64-bit - **GNOME Version:** 46 - **Windowing System:** Wayland - **Kernel Version:** Linux 6.10.5-1-default I'll attach a hopefully relevant log (kernel logs without most firewall records). The records starting at Sep 02 22:52:48 are from Tumbleweed snapshot 20240901, those starting at Sep 02 22:59:24 are snapshot 20240830, and those after Sep 02 23:19:51 are snapshot 20240829 (when suspend/resume started working again). I'll try downgrading kernel-firmware-* packages tomorrow (or, rather, lock them before upgrading from 20240829), if it hasn't already been done by then. FYI, I noticed that ucode-amd was also upgraded between 20240829 and 20240901, if that might have any bearing. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

Can anyone confirm if the fix is in the repos already?
No its not in tumbleweed 20240903 if you have installed the "tumbleweed cli" you could do: tumbleweed switch y yast2 check if the kernel-firmware with number: 20240903 is there. if not tumbleweed revert and wait, or, tumbleweed switch 202408026 (as i remebmer correct last version with firmware without this bug) there should be "kernel-firmware version 20240809", install this version "lock" (never change) it and tumbleweed revert (or "tumbleweed switch" it depends if you have switched before) to go to the newest version after some tumbleweed updates you should check again, and if a new version is there, remove the "lock" bad luck is only if you have like me, a tumbleweed system installed without a graphic desktop, the screen stays black at all, here no ssh is configured and you have to update (or downgrade) the system from another system with mount/bind.... the firmware number tumbleweed 20240826 is the bad version do not install if you are affected by this bug. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

I just applied the release 20240906 today, and it works. Thanks to all the devs who helped fix this issue! -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
