[Bug 1195813] New: Cannot connect any USB device ("max number of devices this xHCI host supports is 32")
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1195813 Bug ID: 1195813 Summary: Cannot connect any USB device ("max number of devices this xHCI host supports is 32") Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I was testing two different USB devices (actually SDHC/SDXC cards connected via card reader as sdf, all on same USB port). When I wanted to connect a plain USB stick, it was found, but I was unable to access it. From that moment on no USB device could be connected to any USB port! I had been using the USB stick on the same hardware before, and I had been using it with the same kernel on a different hardware, too. When I tried "hwinfo --usb", the command first hung, then killed my USB mouse (it does not move any more now, and the mouse LED indicates that it has no power any more). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

Is the problem reproduced after the clean reboot? If it's a regression, we may try to find out the culprit change, but it can be fixed only if the issue is reproducible.
Unfortunately the problem was repeatable. Even more: This time the kernel paniced. Unfortunately I don't have the panic message; I just noted everything frozen and the keyboard LEDs blinking. The sequence was: 1) Connect an card reader with card to USB, then remove the card from the reader (Linux does not notice). 2) Insert another card into the reader (Linux notices), then eject the card and remove the reader then. 3) Connect USB stick to the same port and try blkid on it. The command takes very long. The PC freezes. 4) unplug and re-plug the stick (1: Connect UHS-II SD USB 3.1 reader with SDXC card) Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: new SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: New USB device found, idVendor=0781, idProduct=cfd2, bcdDevice= 0.06 Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=4, SerialNumber=2 Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: Product: SDDR-399 Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: Manufacturer: SanDisk Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: SerialNumber: 012345678900 Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: usb-storage 4-4:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected Feb 12 00:39:31 pc7 kernel: scsi host7: usb-storage 4-4:1.0 Feb 12 00:39:32 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg6 type 0 Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] 121536512 512-byte logical blocks: (62.2 GB/58.0 GiB) Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Write Protect is off Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Mode Sense: 21 00 00 00 Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Write cache: disabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sdf: sdf1 Feb 12 00:39:33 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Attached SCSI removable disk (remove SDXC card, insert SDHC card) Feb 12 00:42:07 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] 31116288 512-byte logical blocks: (15.9 GB/14.8 GiB) Feb 12 00:42:07 pc7 kernel: sdf: sdf1 (eject card with reader) Feb 12 00:42:56 pc7 kernel: sdf: detected capacity change from 15931539456 to 0 Feb 12 00:43:04 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: USB disconnect, device number 2 (Plug in USB stick and try to read from block device /dev/sdf) Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: new SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: New USB device found, idVendor=18a5, idProduct=0252, bcdDevice=11.00 Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: Product: STORE N GO Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: Manufacturer: Verbatim Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: SerialNumber: 1234567890123456 Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: usb-storage 4-4:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected Feb 12 00:43:58 pc7 kernel: scsi host7: usb-storage 4-4:1.0 Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: scsi 7:0:0:0: Direct-Access Verbatim STORE N GO 1100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6 Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: scsi 7:0:0:0: alua: supports implicit and explicit TPGS Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: scsi 7:0:0:0: alua: No target port descriptors found Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg6 type 0 Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] 123750400 512-byte logical blocks: (63.4 GB/59.0 GiB) Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Write Protect is off Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Mode Sense: 43 00 00 00 Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sdf: sdf1 sdf2 Feb 12 00:43:59 pc7 kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sdf] Attached SCSI removable disk Feb 12 00:44:35 pc7 kernel: usb 4-4: Disable of device-initiated U1 failed. Last but not least, try the latest kernel in OBS Kernel:SLE15-SP3 repo, too.
I tried via https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/Kernel:SLE15-SP3/kernel-preempt: # zypper addrepo https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:SLE15-SP3/pool/Kernel:SLE1... # zypper refresh # zypper install kernel-preempt Trying this kernel also could not access the USB device, but it seems the kernel is still functional after that. I made an interesting observation: If I connect the USB stick directly to the port, it seems to work; before I had connected it via an USB 3.0 cable connected to the back ports of the motherboard (see end of log). The port status (xhci-hcd) is then: Port 1: 0000.0503 highspeed power enable connect Also note that I had used the very same cable to access an external USB drive without any problem, and that drive added about another 80cm of cable. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
