http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1181271 Bug ID: 1181271 Summary: Nouveau and kernel 5.9, 5.10: visual artifacts and freezes with "DRM: base-0: timeout" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: ivan.topolsky@isb-sib.ch QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- ## Summary: The kernel in OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is affected by this visual+GPU crash bug since kernel 5.9: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/14 There is a patch available against the kernel 5.10.7 (same kernel as OpenSUSE Tumbleweed): https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/14#note_767791 ## Description: On some older Nvidia GPUs when using opensource driver "nouveau" and the display under load shows tearings and eventually freezes (for > 10s), while the logs show multiple occurence of message: `kernel: nouveau 0000:nn:00.0: DRM: base-0: timeout`. This makes the GUI completely unusable. ## Step to reproduce: - upgrade kernel to version >= 5.9 - log into plasma desktop - make sure OpenGL compositing is active - start some activity that involves lots of blitting to the display: - e.g.: play a Youtube video in Firefox - e.g.: furiously move around a large window - journalctl --follow will repeatedly report `kernel: nouveau 0000:nn:00.0: DRM: base-0: timeout` - display artifacts (mostly tearing-like with black patches) - eventually: display freeze for significant portion of time (range >10s up to minutes). (computer stay fully responsive over SSH). ## Workaround: Revert to kernel 5.8.x (e.g.: 5.8.14) ## Note: Upstream contacted, bug bisected, patch available against kernel 5.10.7 ## Request: Until this patch makes it into upstream kernel, would it be possible for OpenSUSE to include it in the kernels packaged with Tumbleweed, pretty please? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
