I had not seen it and I saved your email so thanks for posting it, nowdays there is so much "news" there is not enough time to get it and assimilated it all at once. Thanks for posting :). george

Jess (the author of the linked article) hasn't posted any updates for a while, but to be honest I don't think you're going to get any substantive feel for what KDE4 is really going to be like till the backend of the year at the earliest. At the moment it's all very much brainstorming, setting goals and so on. There's some new eye candy (Oxygen icons and mockups), and lots of backend infrastructure stuff (porting kde to qt4) going on, but all the "Oo-ooh! Aa-aah!" features are going to take some time before the end users are going to be able to play with them all.
But right now I'm pretty darned comfy in my 3.5.2 ;-)

Do you have a link?? or is it just the main site?

I am still on 3.4 using the boxed version and have not upgraded, is 3.5 that much different?? Thanks, George

Hmmm. Tough one to answer. It's a bit prettier, a little slicker, and there's features here and there that are useful. But on the flipside, it's not "supported" by Novell/SuSE, and doesn't get the level of QA that the mainline gets.
If you're experienced, don't mind getting stuck in when you encounter an oddity, then I'd say it is worth it. Take a look at the release notes on: http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-3.5.php http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog3_5to3_5_1.php http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog3_5_1to3_5_2.php to see the major things that might tempt you.
Interestingly I saw on kde.org that they are aiming for an October time Tech Preview. Nice to be right ;-) There's also a working list of KDE4 features at: http://wiki.kde.org/KDE+4+Goals for anyone who's curious.

I think I will wait for a supported one, I love KDE but I don't have the time to fix stuff as I use SuSE for my daily work...maybe I can do it on one of my home boxes..

Yes, and no. ;) There's a lot of bug fixes, and yes - there are new features and eye candy. I'd recommend that you do upgrade.

Upgrade to KDE 3.52. 3.50 has a serious KCalc bug and 3.51 has a serious Kicker bug. 3.52 is bug-free in that respect...

Thanks for the tip, I think I will hold off for the moment and update when the official one comes out..if I find a spare hour I would give it a shot. How long did it take you to upgrade?? Thanks, George

Hi Fred, I was referring to time to get it set up more than time to download it. I have never done an KDE upgrade before and I don't know what is involved and how it needs to happen etc.???
Thanks, george

Typically with an upgrade (particularly from SuSE repositry) you shouldn't have to do any setup work. You install it and continue working as you were for the most part. Sometimes the default method of doing something has changed, and you may stumble the first time it does something different, or when you look for an expected function that has moved or changed. Also you may not be immediately aware that there are added abilities.
I don't recall any particular setup work involved when updating KDE through YaST.
See: http://en.opensuse.org/Add_Packages_Repositories_to_YaST and: http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories for all you should ever need to know about updating your current SuSE system.

So it is just a YaST rpm package that is a lot easier than I thought :).

Sorry..... misunderstood. Only have what apps. are needed loaded. Once the upgrade is done, log out and back in, or IMHO, it's better to reboot. It will use the current setup.

No need to apologize :) my perception was of an involved process with multiple steps, setting up stuff etc... - adding a YaST repository and pulling a package is way easier, if I new that as you do I would probably be only concerned with the download time ;). Thanks for the help. George
