With opensuse 11.2 M6 -2.6.31-rc6-3 from DVD image, and using kde 4.3 desktop the system boots and I log in as non-root or root, splash welcome screen completes then screen goes blank except for an arrowcursor. Accessing using ctl><alt>f4 allows me to see many messages " /usr/bin/kwin --crashes n" where n=1..9
Who should I address this problem to?
I can supply a fuller .xsession-errors file
cpu: M II , memory: 196 Mbyte video card: S3 ViRGE /DX
/////////////////.xsession-errors etc
Are you running the Nvidia display driver?
I have video card: S3 ViRGE /DX running S3virge driver
tall it the hard
way? If yes to these remember you need to run the install script again to rebuild the driver module for the updated kernel.
as root and ran SAX2 to change to the Vesa driver, Booted as a user and followed the instructions for rebuilding (installing the hard way).
I did not look at error messages.
Now all works fine. This was with milestone M6-8.5-default this past weekend.
I will wait till Milestone 7 before continuing with testing. Thanks for reply.
I installed last week KDE4.3.1over OS11.1 on my computer with nvidia GPU. Everything worked like a charm. This week end I had to move to another computer with ATI GPU. I Installed again OS11.1 and added KDE4.3.1. It worked awfully bad, so I installed the catalyst drivers. Since then I face the same problem as you. I tried to disable desktop effects but the problem is the same. Under IceWM, glxgears shows more than 4000fps, so I take it as a confirmation that the problem is not at the level of X or the driver. It really seems related to Kwin that does not digest something. I tried to wait several minutes and... Little by little the desktop appeared. But awfully slow (opening kickoff takes more than 1min) and absolutely unusable. Does anybody know which X settings could/should be used in order to resolve this problem, or should I file a bug? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

The kwin problem should be reported if it shows up that the case. The kwin uses graphic adapter in different way then ICEwm, so some driver problems that can be seen with kwin, can't be triggered with ICEwm. For xorg.conf parameters the best way is to look ati forums, the wiki etc. -- Regards, Rajko http://news.opensuse.org/category/people-of-opensuse/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
