Re: [suse-kde] KDE3.1 observations
I noticed these same things although kuickshow does show up where it's supposed to for me. It would be nice to get that suse menu back though. I guess I'm just to lazy to make the links myself. A few nice things that I really like about it: 1-New multimedia apps, Krec and Kaudiocreator. I've been looking for these exact types of apps for kde, 2-I like the new look (albeit it may be an old scheme, I don't really know but I like it just the same). 3-Konquerer loads noticeably faster, looks better and handles all my java stuff now that used to only work in netscape. 4-Kdm took no tweaking with this install. The last few releases completely hosed kdm and I had to go back and alter things everytime to make it work correctly. Kdm also looks better I think. 5-Jpeg images (wallpaper, previews, etc...) also show up correctly now. Ever since kde3.01 I've had to make changes to the qt install to get them to show up. Had no problems this time. 6-Kmenu seems to be organized a little bit better now. It appears to have just as much content but before, at first glance it seemed a little overwhelming. You would go into each menu and get hit with a barrage of apps that you will probably never use even if you did know what they all were. The way they are arranged now just seems to present better. 7-Kget! Finally a decent download manager for kde. Yet another application that I was frequently wishing I had. 8-Remote desktop, very nice. Thats going to come in quite handy. 9-New control center layout. Nothing new that Ive noticed but it looks much nicer. Organized better. 10-A few extra out-of-the-box wallpapers, nothing fantastic but nice just the same. I think that about covers it for now. Thats just the surface stuff that jumped out at me. There are supposed to be tons of security fixes and other odds and ends as well. Im pretty happy with it.
For those thinking of upgrading I would suggest waiting for SuSE to put rpm's up on their site.
Benefits I've seen (in 12 hours) using the kde.org rpms: 1.) Kmail auto indexing. 2.) Some java (javascript?) web pages which wouldn't work w/ Konqueror but worked w/ all other browsers I tried now work (Yea!!!) 3.) For some reason my screen always seems clearer after an upgrade (probably a psychological effect) 4.) kdesu konqueror shows up in detail view, the way I want it to. 5.) Konqueror hasn't crashed while trying to rename a file or folder (yet)
Disappointments: 1.) NO Kuickshow, I've got to find some workaround. (the new kdegraphics.rpm claims its there but my computer sure doesn't find it.) 2.) Konqueror file manager seems slower. 3.) Krusader doesn't work 4.) Theme (many/all) sett ings revert to default 5.) Many Icons (SuSE menu) lose their images.
Nothing devastating, but basically a balance of improvements and regressions.

Konq filemanager still seems much slower to me though, not sure where I should look for a solution (I use the detailed listview mainly)
java stuff now that used to only work in netscape. Same Here - that's great, no more switching browsers for 1 or 2 sites.

I look forward to trying this one

It will take a bit of getting used to, but I may grow to appreciate it

I think I'll stick to this, Although kde.org's release is not horribly broken I think official SuSE rpm's may reduce hair pulling for some. ---------snip-------------------

It appears that kuickshow is in a diferent rpm than suse8.1 originally had it, whichever rpm command I used did not install the new .rpm. Once I went back and installed kdegraphics3-viewer... all was well. See ya -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
