[opensuse-kde] kdm Xserver crash 12.1 ATI driver
Hello, have any tested 12.1 with the ATI driver "11.9" on my system I have always a crash?. The KDE4 works very bad and slow? Or is this all from Kmail ? Is this correct Kmail starts a background session? On my system, the first I have to do after starting KDE, kwallet is starting and I have to insert the Password? Is this correct? The second is after Installaing and configuration KMAIL (IMAP) I have same freeze from the system and only the reset Button helps? without ATI driver !!! -- mit freundlichen Grüßen / best Regards, Günther J. I used the fglrx repository on http://linux.ioda.net/mirror/ati/openSUSE_Factory/ and I don't have problems. -- fr.gr. Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
I had the same problem with an ATI HD6450. It was solved only by using the latest fglrx drivers from ATI, installing that manually (the repo you point to is one version behind. The new driver was released 4 days ago) Incidentally I would be very happy to use the open source radeon driver with my card, but after a while it freezes X, leaving in the terminals errors like: couldn't schedule IB(6) failed to schedule IB so I was forced to use the fglrx drivers and run into the same problem as Guenther Valerio On Thu, Nov 3, 2011 at 1:46 PM, Freek de Kruijf <f.de.kruijf@gmail.com> wrote:

You might want to add your findings to this bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720745 Also, I'm wondering if the earlier thread on the list about the loss of responsiveness in RC1 as opposed to Beta1 is related? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Oh really, come on guys, nobody paid for this repo (Just me with my money) for the whole infrastructure :-) Patience is a virtue !! And getting feedback from end-users especially on a factory not yet release distribution is important for us, to know if it works or not correctly. Didn't you remember why this repository has been made ? If you look at the ati.amd website, you will see that they have to launch an urgency patch for the 11.10 drivers series for windows. How is that handle for the Linux version ? I'm waiting the green light of Sebastian Siebert (freespacer) after he build his building system, and test. Normally he has now also a HD6xxx series card, so we will be able to deliver a tested driver. Now I've seen a lot of people having trouble mostly with upgrade. My advice to do it safely hasn't change with time boot with blacklist=radeon 3 once in console : use what you can to change the KMS_IN_INITRD="no" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel mkinitrd reboot in console mode (3) (then radeon is cleaned from the initrd) I've the blacklist=radeon sticky on my boot line so I never forget it. At that time install the drivers, if you have any previous version installed remove them with a zypper rm check there's no more /etc/ati do all you update/upgrade install the driver finally ... This is important (also true for manual install of nvidia drivers) The free packages (xorg/mesa etc) sometimes override symlinks made by proprio blob. (I will not complain about that) reboot for safety. With this approach I never has trouble nor with fglrx (HD5750) nor nvidia (GTS,Quadro) ps : for nvidia use blacklist=nouveau
Incidentally I would be very happy to use the open source radeon driver with my card, but after a while it freezes X, leaving in the terminals errors like:
couldn't schedule IB(6) failed to schedule IB
so I was forced to use the fglrx drivers and run into the same problem as Guenther
