[opensuse-kde] Virtual desktops always identical
Hi folks, Does somebody have experience with virtual desktops in tumbleweed or the new milestone ? If i switch to a different wallpaper, then all desktops switch to that wallpaper. Where is the setting to have different wallpapers on each desktop ? If i switch the desktops to folderview and select a different desktopfile or desktop directory, all desktops switch to that desktopfile. Under any condition all desktops are allways identical. To me it looks not correct, Hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Last I heard, wasn't implemented in plasma5, yet.

I have not migrated to Plasma 5 yet, so I don't have much first hand experience. But even in KDE4 having different wallpapers on each "virtual desktop", was in reality not virtual desktops, but actually different "Activities" being used behind the scene. So maybe you could look at activities instead of virtual desktops to achieve your purpose. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I remember several years ago when we transitioned from KDE3 to KDE4, the mail lists and kde forums blew up about this change. Using Activities was the workaround provided by the devs due to coding changes. Cheers! I never understood "Activities" and will never. What are the advantages? And how will they be used? And why do you think that "Virtual Desktops" are actually "Activities"?

How? All I know is that I had several Activities and got lost on my desktop, so I did a reset. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Matthias Müller (Benutzer #439779 im Linux-Counter http://counter.li.org) PS: Bitte senden Sie als Antwort auf meine E-Mails reine Text-Nachrichten!

I think the best way to explain it is that virtual desktops gives you several _identical_ desktops. And activities gives several _different_ desktops (different wallpapers, different desktop widgets, different applications associated and launched automatically, and in the future maybe even different panels for every activity). Activities make sense if you need different desktops for different workloads. Say when you're at home you like to have some specific wallpaper with some nice puppies on it, and a folderview widget showing some specific folder. Then later you're at work and you want a more professional wallpaper and different folders shown in folderview etc. or you're giving a presentation, or you're doing web development or whatever. Then you just switch to a completely different desktop configured specifically for that specific situation with different wallpaper, different widgets etc. with just one click or keyboard shortcut.
And why do you think that "Virtual Desktops" are actually "Activities"?
I don't. I'm just saying in KDE4 to give the perception of different wallpapers for each virtual desktop, the activity technology was actually what was technically used beneath the surface. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

This might be different with KDE5 Plasma, I have not yet upgraded.
btw: on my desktop Debian 7 "Wheezy", openSUSE 13.2 on my Laptop both KDE4

I do not see any benefit, there should be more.

This also I can have with KDE4.

I use 4 virtual desktops, all of which have different wallpapers, some with shared widgets others with different widgets. Each for a different purpose, as reflected by the wallpaper chosen (I'll leave the one with the wallpaper photo of my gorgeous wife, to your imagination). Never used Activities, always seemed kind of redundant. --dg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Never used Activities,
Wrong. You were using activities all the time, as already mentioned. The option to have different wallpapers/widgets on each virtual desktop just implicitly creates a separate activity for each virtual desktop to make this possible. And as this complicates the code and even caused problems/bugs, it has been removed and probably will never be added back. I think I've read that adding back separate wallpapers for each desktop *might* be an option in the future though...
