I read that thread earlier, but I have the same problem as the O.P. over there - my knowledge of ssh and remote X authentication is not deep enough to understand the recommended solution.

Well, X forwarding does not work out of the box. It's no clear if this is a bug or a feutures (I vote for bug). You have to try some of the hints (change sshd config options) from the link above.
