[opensuse-kde] Plasma 5, some thoughts
Hi, I did a quick test with Plasma 5 live media under virtualbox.. Not bad. Why kicker menu and not kickoff ? I really dislike kicker.. On login screen, is there a way to show battery info only if there is a battery ? On desktop machine does not make sense.. There are some software that IMHO does not fit in live media: qt5 assistant qt5 designer qt5 D-bus viewer AMZ dowloader grsync kompare kruler I'm not sure about amarok, for a lots of people a simple media player is enough. We badly need better artwork for the next release, the light green and grey reminds me windows 95. The 13.2 is one of the worst release under this point of view. I'm not a big fan of this "new" flat and minimal look but maybe I only need to get used to it.. It was decided on the last meeting we'll keep kicker as default. You can have kickoff as default if you install upstream branding.

Please file a wishlist bug at bugs.kde.org, the suggestion does make sense.
There are some software that IMHO does not fit in live media:
qt5 assistant qt5 designer qt5 D-bus viewer
These are parts of the qttools package, which is needed to even start a session, and IMO it doesn't make sense to split these few binaries from it...
AMZ dowloader
This one comes with the amarok package...
grsync kompare kruler
I'm not sure about amarok, for a lots of people a simple media player is enough.
Maybe, but one could argue dragon is too simple ;-)

If you check the last meeting log, you'll see that we won't default to openSUSE theme for the next release (in fact, we'll change back to Breeze pretty soon)

Either that, or you can easily change to another style =) Cheers, Hrvoje

Hi Šumski, I've read the meeting transcript. OK, let's say I understand. ( :) ) Is recoloring, modifying breeze and option for opensuse + keeping the geeko splash you already have working? If it's so, I'd be more than happy to recolor the breeze theme (and by recolor, I mean change the blue into our blue-green), recolor the breeze-places icon, and create/export the color theme for plasma. Would that work and would that be acceptable to the KDE team? Kind regards and hvala :) P.S.: Drop by LZS, people seem to miss you there :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

At least it was agreed we could use the greenish icons which you suggested some days ago. As for the rest of the plasma artwork, it was decided to keep the upstream defaults, and i guess we can still install the oS branding, just not default to it. Off course, if someone ;-) volunteers to improve/remake plasma theme and colorscheme, we could maybe re-evaluate the above decision.
Kind regards and hvala :) Cheers/Pozdrav, Hrvoje

Hi. Today Ken agreed with Richard it's probably best to default to vanilla until we find a more long-term solution. And they're pros. When I recolor breeze, i'll send it. Hope to do it as soon as possible. Regards, --- Nenad Latinović holden87@opensuse.org On 07.04.2015 20:12, šumski wrote:

Ugh, had to read the transcript to see why... I think it may be little hurtful for openSUSE to switch to upstream theme. To go in more details, I'm trying lots of distros every year, just out of curiosity. And when you switch to openSUSE at first you do not notice that, but switching from openSUSE to anything else you have this nagging feeling that distribution is not finished. Plymouth boot, login screen, splash screen and default wallpaper are out of sync, which gives the feeling that someone hasn't finished their job. Subconciously, that is very strong point of openSUSE. So, in attempt to move it from talks to actions, what problems do you see with openSUSE branding? What has to be done to make it work properly/better? I see following ways to make it work fine: 1. Make consistent default theme, as it was in 13.1 and 13.2. We can see already that default bright-green theme is quite subjective, but it appears to me that pretty much everyone loved the green gecko on black field theme. Or maybe it's just me :) so I even ported those themes to 13.2 [1]. At the moment it does not have sddm theme because I'm using autologin, but simple change of background should not be too hard. 2. Create some script that will set the background for all the plymouth, sddm, splash and default wallpaper. Out of the top of my head, some kind of symlink that is replaced by the script, plus regeneration of plymouth screen. Current plymouth theme is very flexible, having only fade-in effect, it can be applied to pretty much every wallpaper. Probably that will require some experimenting with the colour themes, some of them may appear too bright and some of them too dark, so maybe scripts should also include some image analyzer and switch to appropriate variant of colour theme. This should also work fine with 9.x style wallpapers, some artful photos of green nature. And of course will be interested in any other suggestions, and I can offer my humble help. I do not have any design skills, but I'm easily annoyed by inconsistencies in themes and colour schemes, so usually I'm ending up with some kind of fix. Nobody indicated that we would drop the openSUSE wallpaper, plymouth screen, etc. However we have to be realistic here. The current KDE community team within openSUSE are not graphical designers. And we are too little in numbers to take this onboard as well. The switch to Plasma5 would come with a couple of changes that would require completely new artwork. the login manager SDDM is the best example for this. Also the current openSUSE Plasma theme no longer works correctly with Plasma5 and would require adjustments. The decision that the team took, was to switch back to the Breeze plasma theme. For kwin (window decorations) we have been using the upstream default since KDE4 and this will just switch from the previous upstream default Oxygen to the new upstream default Breeze.

I think you got the wrong idea. The openSUSE KDE community team is not responsible for the artwork used in Plymouth, default wallpaper, grub, etc. The only decision that was taken is that the desktop theme (what is used for the panel and widgets) will be the upstream default Breeze. The other components are in the hands of the openSUSE artwork team. If this artwork team comes up with a SDDM theme, including a ksplash theme, then we will definitely use it. But at the moment there is none. So this would mean that we either have to switch to GDM or lightdm as login manager or to live with the breeze theming for SDDM and the splash until the artwork theme has created the necessary artwork. Which would normally happen for a new openSUSE release Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Hm, I see. Will it be flavoured version of Breeze or direct upstream? By flavoured I mean the default wallpapers from artwork team and more greenish then cyanish colouring? -- Regards, Stas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

The full desktop theming consists out of the following components: 1) Plasma theme - Which handles the look and feel of the widgets, panels and Applications menu (kicker/kickoff) 2) Background/Wallpaper 3) Splash screen - The screen that is shown between the login manager and the desktop 4) Screenlocker theme - The screen that is shown when you lock the screen 5) Window decorations Plasma5 offers a new way of handling these components by utilizing "Look and Feel" packages. A look and feel package could set/change components 1 to 4 in one go. The Plasma5 desktop in openSUSE will not directly use this, but will use the following theming: 1) Plasma Theme - Breeze upstream theme 2) Background/Wallpaper - default openSUSE 3) Splash screen - There is no specific openSUSE version for this available. We could have a look if replacing just the background is enough to have this more openSUSE like. 4) Screenlocker theme - The same as with the splash screen is valid. 5) Window decorations - This will switch from the old upstream default Oxygen to the new upstream default Breeze. Of course we are more than happy to consider using artwork for any of these components coming from the openSUSE community. At this moment we have one community member that offered to make the icon theme more openSUSE like by recoloring some of its icons.
