SuSE 8.1: kdelink to Sambashares no longer work

Since I upgraded to SuSE 8.1 I can no longer mount a remote sambashare on an winbox from my desktop. The kdelinkfile looks like this: [Desktop Entry] Dev=//Godzilla/GODZILLADATA Encoding=UTF-8 FSType=Default Icon=windows_harddrive_mount MountPoint=/windows/godzilla/data ReadOnly=false Type=FSDevice UnmountIcon=windows_harddrive_unmount The entry in the fstab-file looks like this: //Godzilla/GODZILLADATA /windows/godzilla/data smbfs noauto, user, netbiosname=godzilla, guest 0 0 Since I can mount the shares fine "by hand", I'm assuming the fstab-file is OK. When i click on the icon I get: Could not mount device. The reported error was: SMB connection failed No more info I'm afraid. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Many thanks in advance and Happy Newyear. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ | Meije Oppenhuizen | Non-smoker since 2 years, 3 months, | | Utrecht, Netherlands | 29 days, 8 hours and 50 minutes | ------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a similar problem with SAMBA printing. When I upgraded to 8.1 I could no longer print to a SAMBA printer on a W2K server. Even though I got no error messages when I tried....and even though the machines I upgraded printed just fine before the upgrade. I also tried a fresh install of 8.1 and could not ever get it to print to a W2K printer. Installed 7.3 on a machine, and it prints to the W2K network immediately. Upgrade to 8.0, it still prints....upgrade to 8.1, it all stops. -- Regards, Richard Saint Clair, Co-Founder Technical Manager Internet Users Society Niue Chairman, Pacific Island Chapter ISOC -------------------------------------------- stclair@niue.nu www.niue.nu Voice (68 3) 4630 Fax (68 3) 4237 Internet Service Provider, Niue Island -------------------------------------------- ISP/C, ISOC, APIA, NCOC, ISOCNZ, PICISOC, ARRL -------------------------------------------- Niue Island South Pacific 169 West 19 South -------------------------------------------- Don't forget, Nuts feed the squirrels.

I didn't mention it, but it's the same here. In the add-printerwizard of kprinter the choice to add smb-printers is greyed out. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ | Meije Oppenhuizen | Non-smoker since 2 years, 3 months, | | Utrecht, Netherlands | 29 days, 11 hours and 10 minutes | ------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the same problem. It's caused by the kde rpm files having been re-organised between 8.0 and 8.1. The samba interface is in it's own package now, which, since it naturally wasn't installed in 8.0, isn't upgraded when you move to 8.1. I've writing this from a system still on 8.0 so I can't check what the name of the package is, but search for "samba" in yast2 and I believe you'll find it. /Lennart torsdag 02 januari 2003 19:26 skrev Meije Oppenhuizen:

But SAMBA was installed, I had been using it for printing to W2K networks and file sharing for months. Upgrade to 8.1 and the printing stops! Install a fresh copy of 8.1 including installing the W2K print share and it sees the W2K print server, it just won't print. 7.3 will print right out of the box as you install the samba printers under YAST during the install.....8.0 will do the same thing......8.1, well I have not yet been able to get it to print to any W2K networks even by uninstalling the complete SAMBA package and then installing it again. -- Regards, Richard Saint Clair, Co-Founder Technical Manager Internet Users Society Niue Chairman, Pacific Island Chapter ISOC -------------------------------------------- stclair@niue.nu www.niue.nu Voice (68 3) 4630 Fax (68 3) 4237 Internet Service Provider, Niue Island -------------------------------------------- ISP/C, ISOC, APIA, NCOC, ISOCNZ, PICISOC, ARRL -------------------------------------------- Niue Island South Pacific 169 West 19 South -------------------------------------------- Don't forget, Nuts feed the squirrels.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It seems the samba-client rpm I had installed was not compatible with the kdebase3-samba rpm. smbmount used to point at /usr/lib/samba/classic/smbmnt, but now it points at /usr/lib/samba/smbmnt-classic I still am not able to umount though: only root can umount. I have set suid on smbumount.
