-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all. Frustrated a bit and need some help. I want to add a "SessionType" to kdm but can no longer do so in the login manager via the ControlCenter because the "sessions" section is no longer there. Can't find any reference to "SessionType" in the kdmrc file in the /etc sub-dir, not in xsessions/Xsession files either. Where the hell is it now??? I took out Gnome and wanted to add it in again. But, I took the Gnome ref out before I upgrade KDE and now I am at a lose about just how to add a session type to kdm. Any session type. I might have overlooked something and searching the web only gives old advice or refers to a deb or RH config. Any help would be appreciated. Run wmlist from a terminal. Does gnome show in the list? And does it get added to the session selection? -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win. -Lazarus Long -- Linux 2.6.13-15.7-default

Nope, not listed. Which is what I suspected in light of the fact that I had once removed Gnome from the list. I didn't used to have a prob with this subject - but they changed things on my (bleh :-/ ). I have no prob with manual edits - just can't figure where to do it anymore. I would next see if gnome is installed, for iwlist checks for installed windowmanagers...

Lol, most assuredly Gnome is installed. I can start it from tty term. Like I said, it's about getting KDM to make it available for login in init 5 via the gui. Cheers, Curtis.
If I recall the change was made early in the 9.x series, I'm runnung 9.2 w/kde3.5. The following all assumes that kdm is being used as session manager. My recollection is that windowmanagers are somewhat automatically recognized by kdm as long as there is a proper *.desktop file in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/ If I am remembering correctly then you should only need to check for the file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop Assuming that it exists, open the file w/ kwrite and make sure the information looks correct. Here is a snip from my working /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop file ----------snip-------------- [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=gnome-session TryExec=gnome-session Name=GNOME ----------snip------------- If there is no /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop then you can use one of the other *.desktop files as a template Hope this helps -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!

Ya, I fugured that out - the part about the auto-recognize for the *.desktop files. I checked and indeed the gnome.desktop was there and config as it is in your above example. Then I discover the synaptic had removed the gnome-sessions package. So I went to update it (via red-carpet and it complained about and x11 file not meeting dependencies and there was no available package to fulfill this requirement. I will have to try to fix this. Pbone is usually a fair place to start when I'm confronted by these issues. Thanks for clarifying this issue all the same. Happy New Year. Curtis.
