Just wondering, I know many of you guys don't like the sounds you can turn on in KDE for window actions, system notifications, etc., so you turn them off. I tend to go the other way though and usually have several that are on. That is until recently, as they seem to have quit working. All other sounds work. I can play individual sounds, play oggs, mp3s, etc. everything else, it's just the KDE sounds that won't play! Anyone else noticed this little bug? It seems to have started since the last few KDE updates. I have tried going back to the earlier arts files, which were the latest in the kde mirrors, but that doesn't seem to correct things, so unsure what it might be at this point. It could be something with the new KDE 3.3.2 files, but haven't yet reverted back to the earlier ones to test that theory. Anyone else noticed this? Attempted to correct it and if you were successful, what steps did you take? As I mentioned, this is ONLY the KDE sound notifications, nothing else, all other sound functions work as usual. TIA, Lee

I have the same problem on SuSE 9.2, KDE 3.3.2.
I'm not sure if this will solve your problem. But when Sys. notifications stopped for me, this is what I did: I edited the following files in : $HOME/.kde/share/config
kaccessrc: ArtsBell=True knotifyrc: [Misc] External player= LastConfiguredApp=KDE System Notifications Use external player=false Volume=100 [StartProgress] Arts Init=true KNotify Init=true Use Arts=true
I think the "Use Arts" is the solution, but I'm not sure. I just know I changed these and it works now :) Enjoy, Alvin -- Please reply to the list only.

Thanks Alvin, I wish it had been that simple, although I do believe it has something to do with the present arts files. My two config files were already as you pointed out, so there wasn't much to alter, but I did try removing them and let new ones be built. That was without any success either. I may try to recompile the arts files later to see what effect that has, but for the moment, I'm baffled. All sounds work otherwise and any other window manager, gnome, xfce4, etc. works normally, it is just with KDE they fail. Thanks again, Lee
I also had this but mine is now working. I remember doing two things. 1. set the external player to artsplay. This worked but it then lagged. 2. removed the knotifyrc file and the syscoca caches and rerun ksyscoca 3. If that doesn't work I think I also ran the desktop settings wizard (k-menu:settings) and that got it working as well. Also make sure you do not have lots of knotifrc.xxxx files that also seemed to make things go wrong. If it all fails I think you will need to try an new .kde directory to solve it. Actually Anderw, for me it took recompiling the newer Arts src.rpm to my system to get things working nicely. I tried all the config files, etc. first, but nothing helped until the recompile. Sometimes that happens with SuSE's files, just a small inconvenience, but aggravating still. I think we all forget that when working with KDE config files it is always a good idea to logout and login so KDE can re-read all of its config files. I followed the knotifyrc suggestions (Arts Init=true and Use Arts=true) and sound still didn't work for me in KDE. Had to run so I logged out and when I logged back in sounds were working. Stan
