[opensuse-kde] I'm getting a multimedia-related KDE crash once every start up.
Hello, I just installed a new machine with Opensuse 11.4 & KDE from the /46/ repository. Everything seems to be working but every time I boot up I get a crash report (I included it below). I can just dismiss the dialog box and everything keeps working OK. I looked around on the mailing lists and didnt find anybody's similar problem so it might be my fault. If anybody can help me out with some ideas about fixing this that'd be great. Thanks a bunch. The 260.xx series of NVidia drivers is known to fuck up SUSE installs. The driver somehow messes with the low level glibc library which in turn affects many applications (VLC, Amarok,...). I don't know what exactly goes wrong -- either evil SUSE hacks applied to glibc or NVidia only tests against eglibc-based distributions (Debian, Ubuntu,...) and didn't notice/care that glibc behaves differently from eglibc. Whatever the reason is: The issue is long known to NVidia as well as Novell but the measures taken to fix that issue are minimal on both sides. The only way to resolve this is to manually install the latest 270.xx beta driver: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606 (which naturally is not offered in the driver repository because that would be way to convenient...) You have to install at least 'binutils', 'gcc', 'kernel-source', and 'make'. And I think you need 'kernel-devel' as well. Download the driver to your Home folder, make it executable (right click, Properties, Permissions). Then logout and kill the X server (hold Ctrl and Alt while pressing Backspace twice). Then login on the text-based shell and type: sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.30.run (change the file name accordingly should a newer driver be released while you read this). When the installer asks you whether it should do something for you, just select Yes. After the installation press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot. So far 270.30 seems to run fine for me. The only repositories that are enabled are the basic 11.4 ones and the ones here, http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Upstream_release_aka._KR46_.28KDE_SC... How would I figure out what the incompatible package is?

Yep it came with 4.6.0, kdebase4-4.6.0-6.6.2.x86_64.rpm But looks like it stays there. KDE:Release:46 is already on 4.6.1, kdebase4-4.6.1-228.1.x86_64.rpm Randy -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
That's sure a lot of hijacking & vitriol for one thread :-/ So, this problem is seen by others, was known before releasing 11.4, and there's no known fix for it? Using manually installed nvidia 270.xx beta drivers doesn't fix the problem. How will 'waiting for it to land' improve anything? This is a mild crash, caused by a failing assertion. Identify what the assertion is. Figure out why it was there. Look around the code to see whether it was a legitimate assertion, and if the code has any chance of keeping it as an invariant. Work your way up and around in order to spot the place when the assertion got invalid. Report to KDE developers. Fix the problem and submit a patch. You have to install at least 'binutils', 'gcc', 'kernel-source', and 'make'. And I think you need 'kernel-devel' as well.
kernel-devel is needed (and perhaps kernel-{default|desktop|...|-devel, kernel-source is not.
No need to "reboot", returning to runlevel 5, init 5, is enough. fwiw, I have had good luck with 260.19.44 but unexplained lockups with the 270.26 beta. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Which is the most popular architecture and really excuses shipping 11.3 and 11.4 in de facto broken state for many users... I get that maybe fixing glibc in 11.3 is maybe too much but at least the older but stable 256.53 driver could've been offered in a repo (at least by Open-SLX who make money selling openSUSE -- they didn't make a case for buying the box and supporting them with this severe bug...). No, it's not wrong. Just because Plasma does not crash, it doesn't mean that other software works fine. As soon as 260.xx hit the repos, other software became affected as well. What I'm stating is that 11.3 users that only use what 11.3 ships are not affected even though the bug might be in 11.3. So stay away from anything but the official repos if you still are using a 32-bit system and nvidia and you are fine. "Genuine" 11.3 users are not affected even though 11.3 might be affected. No, I use the version of Amarok that comes with 11.4 and it doesn't work with the 260.xx driver offered through the repositories and since some genius thought it would be a great idea to ship Phonon-GStreamer as default (which can't even seek!) one is forced to install Phonon-VLC if one ever wants to seek in a media file which means that all Phonon applications (eg. 11.4's Juk which in itself is not affected by the glibc bug) crash as soon as they launch. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
