[opensuse-kde] Huge Drop In Responsiveness In 12.1 RC1
Has anybody else noticed a huge drop in desktop responsiveness under 12.1RC1 as opposed to Beta1? When I finally managed to install 12.1 Beta 1 (had to use text mode to install due to an X11 segfault during the second phase), the system was quick and responsive; incredibly responsive in fact - I was impressed. Now in RC1, using the KDE desktop feels like wading through sand. I'm not sure what's causing it, but the graphical effects are extremely choppy (Radeon HD 5670 in my test machine), with what can only be described as a "low framerate" during actions such as maximising and minimising windows. Interestingly, I had the same experience with 11.4 - it was very fast right up until the release candidate stage and then something changed which slowed everything right down. The machine I work on every day runs 11.4 (with an Nvidia Geforce GT440) and is manageable, but KWin eventually (after perhaps a week or more) automatically disables desktop effects as they become too slow to use. I'd be content to blame the graphics drivers, but this has happened with cards by both Nvidia and AMD/ATI, with and without proprietary drivers. Can anybody explain what might have happened? Surely there shouldn't be such a radical difference in performance between a Beta and a Release Candidate? I noticed some problems with responsiveness on rc1. But to me it didn't seem gfx related. It seemed like disk issues - either disk sleep or just a lot of I/O making the system "freeze" for ½-1 second at very frequent intervals. Mostly seemed to happen after a few seconds of idleness. I haven't quite been able to pinpoint what is actually happening though. It's a pretty default 12.1rc1 with strigi disabled and akonadi running - but with zero data in it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Perhaps the graphics choppiness is a symptom only. I can try recording a video to compare the two if the devs think it would help. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

What does iotop say?
iotop was initially (shortly after login) constantly showing a value of around 3.5 to 3.9 M/s for "Total DISK WRITE". This ended shortly afterwards and it showed 0.00 B/s for both read and write while I dragged around the various windows, however responsiveness remained very low. top however shows Xorg using up to 100% CPU when I drag windows around. Is that normal? I suppose I can try comparing it to the Beta... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Hello, I get this unresponsiveness too. The indicator I get is when the monitor program [gkrellm] shows a steep rise of a line in the the procs/users window. My desktop freezes completely. I have the seconds turned on in the the clock and sometimes that even stops updating too. I will attach an example gkrellm snapshot when the system is stalling. The only thing I can do is a system restart. Glenn

Ok, not an IO problem

Depends a lot on the setup but for good hardware (as you have) and drivers it is not normal. I don't have any AMD graphics here to test with but I get ~8% total CPU load from kwin+xorg while dragging windows around the screen with default compositing effects on. Comparing vs the beta with everything else the same (ie don't switch from fglrx to radeon) would be *much* appreciated. Will --

Do you have nepomuk enabled? Also check packagekit, sometimes it keeps spawning and using CPU then terminating and restarting again.

Comparing would definitely help. If Xorg uses a lot of CPU it seems that the GPU is not doing its job and the CPU has to help out. With wobbly windows and moving them around I do not get the high usage on my intel notebook. OK, Sven and Will, I'll try to get that tested right away. I'll also note down which graphics driver is loaded to make sure it's the same one. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

OK, here are my results. Both installs use kernel module "radeon" for graphics, however Beta1 doesn't use more than 40% CPU when dragging windows around, even with many open. Could this regression be related to the fix for this issue here which was crashing X on first boot? If not, ignore my silly suggestion. ^_^ https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=723777 Malvern. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I've tested against RC2. Responsiveness is mildly improved, and Xorg no longer uses 100% CPU, but I'm still getting "pauses" and choppiness.
