[opensuse-kde] TW system sounds, and no TW system sounds
I have a multiboot Haswell system on which it has been a serious pain to make sound work. With help from Takashi on the opensuse-factory list[1], I've finally managed to get sound almost everywhere. The holdout is actually two, system sounds from Plasma5 in TW, and sound from smplayer running in Plasma5 in TW, where aplay, HTML5 and YaST2 test sounds all work. Where it is working across the board: Mageia 5/KDE4 Fedora 23/Plasma 5 13.1/TDE/KDE4 13.2/KDE4 42.1/KDE3 TW/KDE4. The intentional difference between the TW/Plasma5 and TW/KDE4 installations WRT KDE is on the KDE4 I've set locks breez* and kde-oxygen-fonts in order to block upgrading any more of KDE4 to KF5 than is forced. Consequential differences are necessarily a few rpms, but WRT sound I see the non-working KF5 installation even though running the same kernel has a different loaded snd module configuration, thus: --- 1 2015-12-24 05:51:02.095724644 -0500 (broken KF5) +++ 2 2015-12-24 05:51:09.245708595 -0500 (working KDE4) @@ -1,11 +1,13 @@ -snd 90112 16 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel +snd 90112 14 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_device snd_hda_codec 147456 4 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec_generic 81920 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_hda_codec_hdmi 53248 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek 86016 1 snd_hda_core 73728 5 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel -snd_hda_intel 40960 4 +snd_hda_intel 40960 2 snd_hwdep 16384 1 snd_hda_codec snd_pcm 135168 4 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_core -snd_timer 36864 1 snd_pcm +snd_seq 77824 0 +snd_seq_device 16384 1 snd_seq +snd_timer 36864 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq soundcore 16384 1 snd How can it be determined why the differences, or if they matter? How to get system sounds to work in KF5? In multimedia settings, no backends are offered, even though both phonon-backend-gstreamer and phonon-backend-vlc are installed on both TW installations. Another difference noted is on the working KDE4, phonon-backend-vlc came from Packman in June, while no other sound-related packages are from Packman, or are currently available from Packman. I am using phonon vlc backend on Tw Plasma5 but I don't know how you would set it since kmix is no longer used. And I have all sounds I have tried on all four of my Tw/Plasma5 boxes. I don't know about smplayer as I don't have it installed. If you want to know something specific about my system(s), ask. I really don't have time to search thru 100's of lines of specs about your various systems to find differences to my systems. And if it is only Tw/Plasma5 that is concerning you, let's only talk about Tw/Plasma5. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Found where to configure backend for sound, systemsettings. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
