[opensuse-kde] broken KDE-4.10.5 repo for 12.2???
I tried to upgrade a P4HT 64 bit 12.1/4.9.5 installation to 12.2/4.10.5[1] using zypper, but every session start segfaults in kdeinit4 without ever painting any kind of panel or app starter. Is this a known problem, and if so, is it expected to be solved before 12.2 support ceases? Exactly what package(s) is/are responsible for the existence of panel and app starter in KDE4? Did you created a new user and see if the session still crashes there ? It can easily be that the KDE4 config contains certain settings from 4.9 that are not compatible with 4.10. With such upgrades it is always advisable to also try it with a new user on that system to see if it is not the existing configuration that causes the crash. This is certainly not an known issue. Please also check if all KDE packages have been upgraded and that you don't have a 4.9.5 package still around which could cause issues

12.2 support focuses on the support of openSUSE 12.2, this means that KDE 4.9 is supported. That the KDE:Release:410 repository is offered, doesn't automatically mean that this repository is officially supported with 12.2. It is just a courtesy from the KDE team to provide a newer KDE version to an older distribution.

That would be kdebase4-workspace. Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

No, but I eliminated relevant "hidden" directories and files in $HOME that KDE ever uses, leaving behind only .config/.mc, bits of .local, .mozilla, .fonts, the nepomuk killers nepomukserverrc & nepomukstrigirc in .kde/share/config/.

Did that first, then after getting frustrated wiped *all* kde packages and most of xorg with zypper, and zyppered them back in, with exactly same crashing result.

The problems that make both 12.2 and 4.10.5 desirable are https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39949 (for which there is a fix for 12.2 but not anything newer in home/bjoernv) and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320561 that kills 4.11 usability.

Before ever deleting anything I force reinstalled that one, with no apparent effect. :-( I might try adding 4.10.5 to a fresh 12.2 on another system after some sleep time to see if it's repeatable, if you have no more simpler suggestions. ISTR there used to be before kscreen in 4.11.x a package called krandr, but it seems to have disappeared from every repo I've checked. Maybe this absence is behind or otherwise related to the kdeinit4 crash? KDE3 has the krandrtray applet, which maybe is causing me confused recollection. I have several systems with 12.2 & 4.10.5 that don't crash, but I think none of them have been updated since July. I just booted one to check. Its newest initrd is 18 July, but uses rv200 video rather than i945, and has no krandr or kscreen installed or available either. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Felix, i am assuming you did this part correctly, but need to ask: did you switched completely to the KR410 repo? Most importantly due to underlying libraries built in KR410, and not in 12.2 (or just newer versions there, i'm looking at Qt mostly) Cheers, Hrvoje

I don't know how it could have been incomplete. I checked for instances of 4.8.*, but what more I did specifically on that issue I can't remember any more. I eventually gave up on the upgrade process and did a fresh 12.2/KDE4 install, then tried to upgrade it to 4.10.5. I eventually got tired of the never-ending zypper conflict resolution questions and ripped all of KDE4 out. I then tried installing, Trinity, which failed to even start installing due to dependence on a non-existent Hal. KDE3 is now running on that box and I'm done trying to do any more with it, having spent nearly every waking hour since 24 hours ago tending or waiting on it. My other 12.2 systems, whether 4.8.x, 4.9.x, 4.10.x or KDE3 were working OK at least as of their last boots. If if wasn't for ancient bugs that never get fixed and newer bugs I can't avoid[1], I wouldn't be messing with 12.2 (or likely KDE3), but it's the last OS release (AFAICT) not fatally handicapped by https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39949 filed over 27 months ago.
