[opensuse-kde] KDE4.6.2 (on 11.4) Kmenu names not showing
I've been poking at this one for a little while now without much success. Using openSUSE 11.4 and KDE 4.6.2. I've got a few applications - the games from HumbleBundle 2 - that have been added to the KMenu by their installers. When I navigate to the applications in the KMenu, the icons are showing, but there is no text next to the icons (Application name field is empty). A mouse hover shows the app names in grey text in the Description field. If I go to the KMenu editor and check the entries, they are filled in correctly - there is a name in the Name field, and the Description fields are all blank. If I add text to the Description field, save and exit the editor, the new Descriptions I've added are not shown on mouse hover, and the Application name is still not showing. Has anyone else seen this? C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Can you reproduce this creating a menu entry from scratch? If so, give comprehensive steps. If not, attach one of the HumbleBundle-created .desktop files and we can test it (eg symlinking /usr/bin/some-game to /bin/true). Yes it's reproducible. 1. Right-click KMenu 2. Select Edit applications 3. Pick a menu entry point. I selected Games > Arcade 4. Click New item 5. Name item Testing 6. Fill in the Command field with a known application... for example kwrite 7. Do not give it the optional description 8. Save When you check the KMenu at this point the object is visible in the menu, but the name is not visible. Hover with a mouse and the name shows up in the Description area. If I go back into the menu editor and give the new object a description, then the name shows up in the right place, and the new description shows on mouse hover. Interestingly, the Humble Bundle game items all have a Comment. If I add a new Description, leaving the comment, then the problem persists. If i move the Comment to the Description, then everything is back to normal. So, it seems that a menu object with a Name but no Description or Comment displays incorrectly. A menu item with a Name, Description and Comment displays incorrectly. Ummmm.. does that make sense? Also... missed this when I was testing earlier... if the Description is the same as the Name, then it also displays incorrectly. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Just resurrecting an old thread. This issue has popped into my awareness yet again -and NOT just with the Humble Bundle games, but with ANY application i install that adds a node to the menu which only has a name (no Description). I've got a clean install of openSUSE 12.1 and KDE4. I've updated to KDE4.8.1, and started adding in my applications. I've noticed that yet again, if an item in the standard Application Launcher is added *without* a Description (only a Name), then the Name gets moved to the Display location in the App Launcher menu. (I don't mean in the menu editor) So all that is displayed is an Icon, and no text off to the right. Hover the mouse, and you can see the application name displayed in small light grey font where the optional Description is supposed to be. If I open the Menu Editor and add text to the empty (optional) Description field (it can even be just a single empty space) and then save, when I go back into the Application Menu everything is displaying as expected. Two questions... has anyone else noticed this? or is it just my system? I've searched bugs.kde.org, but haven't found the right combination of keywords to turn up anything.. yet. I believe I have seen the same issue. Additionally, if the name and description are exactly the same, then you once again end up with icon, but no text. mini rant Using description rather than program name by default seems ... Hmmm I'll have to poke the KDE bugs again... I never seem to turn up what I want when I poke bugzilla based bug trackers. Since it's on at least one other install (an d thus not a case of me breaking something)... I'll create a new bug report on bugs.kde.org if I can't find an old one laying around.
