I'm a RedHat user getting tired of their 'support' for KDE. So I'm looking for another distro that has quality and truly supports KDE. Everyone's telling me to use Suse. So here I am. So what's the real deal? Does YaST offer support for the updates to KDE allowing me to easily update or do I have to manually update like in RedHat (rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.rpm)? Advice, suggestions, comments please. ~ Matthew

Some updates are supported through YaST, but far from all. I think the rule is security fixes and critical bugfixes, but not feature additions.
or do I have to manually update like in RedHat (rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.rpm)?
If you could do that in Red Hat there'd be few complaints wouldn't there. The point is that Red Hat rarely provide rpms of any description. No matter how you choose to install. With Red Hat you're usually forced to install from source. In the "supplementary" directory on ftp.suse.com and its mirrors (use mirrors, unless you're a *very* patient person) there are rpms for just about everything. They're not "officially supported", but they're there. How you install them is up to you. rpm -Uvh works, so does kpackage. Anders

Given KDE, it's probably best to go to Mandrake or Suse. I've used all 3 distros. Left RedHat for being 'half-baked'. What a mess. 'Nuff said. Left Mandrake because they're 'forked'. Not a bad distro, but some 3rd party software is not compatible. Experienced rampant instability for the past 3 months with Suse, but now running 8 with K3.0.3, and things are stabilizing now. My fonts are messed up, and I can print nor fax, but otherwise Suse rocks. Whatever you do, don't use Yast2 to switch from Cups to LPR and back again. It's really busted me now. Whereas I've now found that the fix for the original problem is fairly easy, it's too late since I performed the above. - -- If only God would give me some clear sign! You may want to have a look at debian. KDE can be kept "bleeding edge" as simple as "apt-get update;apt-get upgrade" -- Matthias Hentges [www.hentges.net] -> PGP + HTML are welcome ICQ: 97 26 97 4 -> No files, no URLs "Thats what sucks about windows, you can't say that you rooted some one. You can also use apt for SuSE. Have look at http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ . It will upgrade almost all rpm packages you have installed. Yeah, and upgrade SuSE 8.0 to KDE 3.04 IS possible with apt-get :-) Marcel

that sucks. what especially pisses me off is the fact that the actual RPM packages ARE there. in dir kde9 in the update tree for 8.0... just no patch file. bye, [MH]
