Re: [suse-kde] FTP as install source fails SuSE 8.2
Hi Jeff, thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately the IP address made no difference. Could it be that the FTP update route is only available for the actual original setup of SuSE since the error below seems to point to the absence of some Install Src record in the FTP directory. Perhaps FTP alternative sources for updates aren't available for DVD/CD installed versions of SuSE?? For info I tried the following entries in the YaST dialog for alternative installation source... Server name: ftp.suse.sk (as well as 147.175.1.23) Directory: i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/yast-source (with various combinations of leading trailing slashes etc.) All ended up with the same error message :-( Regards Rich On Tuesday 27 May 2003 22:01, Jeffrey Ivins wrote:
I would suggest you find the IP number of the FTP server.. I was able to install via FTP using the IP number instead of the server name..

Hmmm, it is possible, that Yast needs active FTP access, whereas a browser or fully grown ftp client works with passive ftp. If you have no high ports open (local firewall, router, proxy, etc), then you can view the site with konqueror (passive) but yast (active) fails (assuming my guess is right). Don't know it for sure, but perhaps it's worth a look. Daniel
I had to use "Manual Installation" in order to get ftp install to work - loaded my network card driver, and then entered ftp server's IP address and directory path on the ftp server. The instructions in the readme on Suse's ftp site ("linux install=ftp://...") didn't work for me unfortunately. Regards, Vadym Richard Andrews wrote:

I have a CD installation of SuSE 8.2 and I was able to add an ftp site for updates. I tried a number of mirrors that failed with the error message you got about missing Install Src or something like that. I did get one ftp site to work, and was able to update KDE to 3.1.2 using that site. On Change Installation source in Yast 2 I clicked add. I checked the ftp radio button. for ftp site I put ftp.leo.org For directory I put /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/yast-source I left it at anonymous ftp. This worked fine for me. Other ftp sites gave the error messsage. you might try this. Mike -- Michael A. Coan Woodlawn Foundation 524 North Avenue, Suite 203 New Rochelle, NY 10801-3410 tel 914-632-3778 fax 914-632-5502
