[opensuse-kde] High Memory Usage in 11.1- KDE 4.2.3
I had a chance to install the latest and greatest Opensuse 11.1 on my Thinkpad R61i yesterday. I have 1 GB of RAM and Intel Graphics Driver 945GM. I noticed that it takes a huge amount of memory at boot of around 300MB (measured through htop and free -m) w/o any applications on. I have turned off all necessary services like cups, avahi, bluetooth etc, autostart disabled in /usr/share/autostart for non-necessary services...still the high memory usage. I have all of the latest updates for KDE 4.2.3 and Qt 4.5.1 applied. Now Opensuse 11.0 had a far far less memory footprint of approx 170-180MB at boot w/ the same settings as above. Can someone help on why would KDE 4.2.3 in 11.1 and 11.0 show such a huge difference in memory footprint? To back that up somewhat, on my system (also with 1 GB RAM but with NVIDIA graphics), the memory usage at startup is also ~280-300 MB. Individual processes eat up system resources in the following way:- 1. plasma ~ 30-40 MB (which easily shoots up to ~60 MB when I change a wallpaper or the plasma theme or add a few widgets, etc.) 2. krunner ~ 25 MB 3. kwin ~ 25 MB 4. about 2 or 3 instances of knotify with ~ 10-15 MB each 5. Xorg ~ 50 - 70 MB (but this may be due to NVIDIA's problems) I am using KDE 4.2.3 (KDE/42 repository) with Qt 4.5.1 too, and it looks like these core KDE4 processes (1-4) are using way more memory than what used to be in openSUSE 11.0 (or 11.1 with 4.1.3), does it not? -- Atri -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

One possible and very likely answer is that you are just not measuring properly, since it's very non-trivial to measure memory usage on Linux and 99.9% people get it wrong. See http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/memory/ . If you are sure your numbers are right, then the easiest option would be finding out what uses that memory. PS: It is possible to get Exmap from home:/llunak:/mix repo, but it crashes on 64bit for an unknown reason. -- Lubos Lunak KDE developer -------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: l.lunak@suse.cz , l.lunak@kde.org Lihovarska 1060/12 tel: +420 284 084 672 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
