Any time I open Konqueror with either 'file:/' or with the root folder in the tree view panel, it locks up. It doesn't matter whether I do it as a user or root. When I close the Konqueror window with the close button, after a 10 or 15 seconds I get a dialog box with the following: Window with title "craig - Konqueror" is not responding. This window belongs to application konqueror (PID=7087, hostname=localhost). Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this application will be lost.) Any ideas what might be the problem? Where would I look for the config files and log files for Konqueror? Thanks, Craig

Maybe you need to clean out your /tmp directory? Usually it's best to drop down to init 1, rm -rf /tmp/*, then back to init 5. Don't mistype your "rm" command or you could find yourself removing the /tmp directory altogether, not good. Just a shot in the dark, but is there a .desktop file there? Maybe do a "ls -l /" and see if there are any extra file that could be messing with it. I have SuSE 9.1 Pro and my "/" only contains directories and no files. Also, does this also happen with any other user account or while logged in as root? Alvin

Hi Craig, In Konqueor, under View, turn off any Previews. Also try turing off the "Folder Icons Relfect Content" option. It sounds like Konqueror is reading something that it isn't expecting. Alvin

Unfortunately, right now it immediately locks up when started because the root folder is selected in the tree view. Can you point me to config file, so I can edit it directly? Thanks

To change the root location in konqueror by editing: ~/.kde/share/apps/konqsidebartng/entries/root.desktop Also you can find several konqueror config files in: ~/.kde/share/config Another way is type this in a shell: konqueror /home Alvin

I didn't follow up on the complete thread, but did someone already suggest to do an "ls -l /"? And maybe do the same in all subdirectories of /? Or, an "ls -lR /" (this will take a while)? Do any of them lock up too? Mhm, if all else fails, and only then, you could attach with strace to the locked up konqueror process, e.g. strace -p <PID of konqueror> Maybe it gives a clue what's going on. Mario

I do the same (keep a symbolic link to /media/floppy in /) and rarely have a diskette in the drive but have not experienced this symptom. On the other hand, every time I copy (to the clipboard) in a KDE application (but not in other applications such as Mozilla or Java GUIs), the diskette drive is accessed, making a distinctive pattern of sounds.

Sorry, but that is *not* the same. There is a major difference between having a floppy drive which does not contain a disc, and not having that drive at all. One thing, I would expect to find clues to that sort of problem in /var/log/messages Actually, since I have the following line in my /etc/syslog.conf *.* /dev/tty9 I would expect to see that sort of thing on virtual screen 9 (.ctrl. .alt. F9), unless the machine had totally frozen up to the extent that I could not even switch screens. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

Yes, I suspected you might have meant that, but it wasn't entirely clear (it's not too far-fetched to hypothesize that "in the" got lost in editing your message). But since I do so wish I could keep my diskette from activating every time I copy something to the clipboard in a native KDE application, I never pass up the opportunity to mention that odd symptom in the hopes that it will catch the eye of someone in the know who will then tell me how to prevent it from happening.

I recommend you have a look at the dar (disk archive) utility, and - under KDE - at kdar, a very nice grahical frontend to dar. You'll find all necessary information at http://dar.linux.free.fr/ and http://kdar.sourceforge.net/. Regards,
Thanks Guys! I really goofed! I need to 'copy' not
archive, in the strictest sense, from dvd to cd's.
But I am so glad to know about these programs...turns
out KDar, dar are in SuSE 9.1 Pro distro I use. One
caution I must address is that once the cd's are
written, I must issue them to $M-ft users. So,
archival files (i.e. .dar, .bz2, etc. types) are not
such a good idea. Hopefully, these personally-issued
cd's will assist some students and others with using
and reading the mainly OpenSource linux info.
Thanks again---I have much to study about CD/DVD
copying, file formats, and processes.

Is anyone familiar with how to do this? A. Goal: archive cd media with a tool which provides these capabilities ---- 1. Copy data to hard disk; 2. Copy (stream?) data from hard disk to cd media while "spanning" data across multiple cd's, prompt's user for input (insert cd #1, #2, #3,...etc.; 3. Performs bit-by-bit verification of data to insure data integrity; 4. "Bonus" => copy protect media to prevent unauthorized distribution, i.e. make all available data 'read-only'.
I recommend you have a look at the dar (disk archive) utility, and - under KDE - at kdar, a very nice grahical frontend to dar. You'll find all necessary information at http://dar.linux.free.fr/ and http://kdar.sourceforge.net/. Both programs can be easily compiled from the source distribution, if SuSE doesn't provide the latest versions for your distribution.
