[opensuse-kde] Nvidia Drivers/KDE4 - Geforce FX5500
HI I've got this board running a driver version 173.14.15 (not available on the nvidia site - latest there is 173.14.12). This driver is completely pants for KDE4, it is slow as molasses going uphill in the snow and artifacts all over the place (its finewith KDE3.5) - does anyone know if this will ever be upgraded to work with KDE4? I've tried all the other beta versions 177.x, 180.x and they all exit the install script saying that this card is not known about and wont be installed. Do ihave to upgrade my card to work with KDE4? If so, any recommendations? I'm not a gamer so i don't need any monster card. It can be ATI or NVidia but it needs to to have some life in it and not be deprecated as my current one seems to be. thanks Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.16/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.16-pkg0 I use this, and some of the most annoying stuff is solved, the most prominent is garbled screen with OpenOffice window active. Speed is better then before, but it is not a miracle. Well, not with 22" wide screen and some 1500 MHz Athlon XP. Apropos upgrade, here is the comparative list of 8 series: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html All GeForce: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html I would look those with higher memory bandwidth that still fit in the budget. Lower in the list are modls that can be worse than FX5500, so watch carefully. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I too have FX5500 and 173.14.15 and I don't find it very bad - apart from the horrible OOo problem with plasma that Rajko mentions. Though my Intel gfx on the lappy performs better with KDE4, which it probably shouldn't ;-) Nvidia have put our cards into legacy mode, so while there appears to be some bugfixing going on, Nvidia seem to want you to buy a newer card to have a really updated driver which supports KDE4 properly. You don't mention which version of KDE4 you're running, but if you happen to be running >= 4.2.0 you may find this tip very useful: http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/todays-tip-kdeskipargbvisuals.html PS: Personally I'm considering buying a used ATi Radeon 9800 or x800 as those are said to perform well with the free radeon driver, and I only have AGP, no PCI-Express, so options are limited. I don't have perfect data yet about whether the radeon driver causes any notable problems for KDE4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
