[opensuse-kde] KDE 4.2.3 on 11.1 login problem
Hello all- During an attempted upgrade to KDE 4.2.3 from KDE 4.2.2 KDE broke. As it was upgrading, something occurred that caused KDE to not recognize commands...like if I hit ALT+F2 and entered a command it would give an error. Additionally, Yast2 starting giving errors like "could not mount /var/adm/packagename/blah" or something to that effect. I also could not log in to a tty. A reboot (and finishing the upgrade) seemed to fix everything...except KDE. I can log in to IceWM, but if I try to log in to KDE it starts to log in and then the X server resets. Does anyone have any ideas on how to start troubleshooting this? I can post any logs that are requested. A good first step for troubleshooting is trying to log in with a new user. If it works for the new user, the user settings of the old user are broken. If it doesn't work for the new user either, then your installation is broken systemwide for some reason. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I tried logging in as a new user and renaming my user's .kde4 directory and it still doesn't work. I'm thinking it is a systemwide problem, but I can't find any logfiles with meaningful errors. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

There doesn't seem to be anything useful in the logs. I suggest you try updating your packages again (maybe there was a temporary problem or inconsistency). Also trying a failsafe session and running manually 'startkde' from there might provide some info. -- Lubos Lunak KDE developer -------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: l.lunak@suse.cz , l.lunak@kde.org Lihovarska 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 972 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I updated my packages and tried startkde from and xterm in icewm. The screen blinked with the post-login (I'm not sure what to call it...) screen and then went back to icewm. Console output says startkde: Starting up... startkde: Shutting down... startkde: Running shutdown scripts... startkde: done Could it be a dbus problem or something? I can't run KDE programs (like kmail or kopete) from within icewm either...
