Hi! After updating my SuSE 8.0 Pro (from KDE 3.0.0 to 3.0.4 and also all the other recommended patches) via the YOU I'm facing a quite strange problem, when I'm logged in as 'root'. The panel bar (and only when logged in as 'root') doesn't show anymore anything beside the first 5 symbols (counting from the left, i.e. Start Programs, Browse YaST, Shell, Desktop). So the desktop-overview, the programme windows, the lock-screen and log-out buttons, shortcuts to KOrganizer, Klipper and Available Hardware and also the time/date are missing as well as all the separators. Even choosing the default settings in the Control Center --> Panel doesn't help ... What to do to fix this problem? That's right. But I want to add, that one is _STRONGLY_ encouraged, _NOT_ to login to KDE as root. You can login as normal user and then you can start applications with root privileges using a shell and use "kdesu <application>". This way only the application that needs to have root privileges, runs as root. All other apps cannot harm your system. This prevents the deletion of important system files by mistake when using a graphical file manager like konqueror or a similar program that under normal operation is designed to modify the whole file system. This is the reason why KDE hampers the comfort of usage intentionally when running as root. Believe me, you will encounter such a maximum credible accident faster than you think. Daniel
