Hi Alexander, I would explore available widgets. Desktop context menu (right click) >> Add Widgets. Need for containers that will group often used items did not seize to exist with KDE4, so there is few useful widgets that you can add with drag and drop to the panel. For instance: Quicklaunch is hosting small application icons. It takes relatively little space in the panel and application launch with a single click is faster even then favorites tab in main menu. Quick Access offers view and access to the arbitrary folder. For your use case see how that works by pointing it to Desktop directory in your home. One that is meant to be on a desktop is Folder View. It is a widget and it will be covered with any window, so I don't find it very usable as a application launcher, but rather as a view to some often used directory. 1. Open dolphin 2. In the address bar type in "applications:" (no quotes) 3. Navigate so you can see the folder you want. 4. Drag the folder to the panel 5. Make a folderview or shelf widget, depending on what you like better.  You may have to set the icon manually.

This works fine for single applications, but not folders which contain more applications.

What is a folderview? So I don't understand what means: "Make a folderview"

Which version of KDE are you using? For the last few releases, if you follow my instructions, when you drop the folder on the panel you will get a menu (make sure you position your mouse to one side of the panel or between two other icons so you get see a dark box). Those options will include "Folder View", "Shelf", or "Icon".
