Just added KDE 4.8 repo today on 11.4 system not booted since last August, then did zypper dup (without checking to see if X was working first), hunted down remaining 4.6.0 packages and zypper rm'd them. That resulted in the subject error message when tried with startx, and KDM simply failing to start if booted to runlevel 5. (Where does a KDM startup failure get logged?) Then I zypper rm'd all of KDE and installed it again, which apparently changed nothing. Plenty of disk space is available for tmp files, and tmp dirs all have full write permission. Note below in log "kdostartupconfig4". That looks suspicious, but I don't know how to find out if it's a problem. Note zypper output below doesn't actually say what rpm provides libfam.so.0, but MC can't find one anywhere in the /usr tree. If answers to above questions aren't it, can anyone look at what I've pasted below and tell me what's missing or broken?
