[opensuse-kde] weird url opening behavior
list-- lately when i click on an url in an email(1) or usenet posting(2) the site gets copied to /var/tmp/kdecache-{USER}/krun/{arbitrary-digits} and firefox opens it as file:///var/tmp... my opensuse is 11.4, 64bit -- i try to stay back with stable official repositories(3), not looking for trouble, and i hit Online Update on average every third day my kde is 4.6.4 (as reported by kmail's help menu), but when i look for kde in yast i see some confusing details -- for kdebase4, in the Installed(Available) column of the versions tab, i see (in red) 4.6.4-10.1(4.6.0-6.6.2), as if 4.6.0 were an upgrade to 4.6.4 all kdebase4 packages show the same kind of downgrade as an upgrade in red any help tracking down the cause of this weirdness and my url clicking weirdness will be appreciated ---------------------------------------- (1) kmail, v1.13.6 -- but when i look at the versions tab in yast it says v4.4.10-3.2-x86_64, from repo openSUSE-11.4-Oss which looks more like the knode version than kmail (2) knode, v4.4.10 -- the versions tab in yast for knode has the same string as kmail shows (3) following is an extract from 'zypper lr -u' from which i have deleted all repos not enabled, and the alias column, and the enabled and refresh column (all yes) -- all have priority 99 # from zypper lr -u # | Name | URI ---+----------------------------------+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 | Updates for openSUSE 11.4 11.4-0 | http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/ 2 | nVidia Graphics Drivers | ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ 3 | openSUSE BuildService - Games | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_11.4/ 7 | openSUSE:11.4:Contrib | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/11.4:/Contrib/standard/ 8 | Packman Repository | http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.4/ 11 | openSUSE-11.4-Non-Oss | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.4/repo/non-oss/ 12 | openSUSE-11.4-Oss | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.4/repo/oss/ with apologies if my mailer or yours causes it to wrap sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

(1) kmail, v1.13.6 -- but when i look at the versions tab in yast it says v4.4.10-3.2-x86_64, from repo openSUSE-11.4-Oss which looks more like the knode version than kmail

i was able to fix the url clicking weirdness by changing 'firefox' to 'firefox %u' in System Settings -> Default Applications -> Web browser i'd still like to know why yast thinks 4.6.0 is an upgrade to 4.6.4 sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

This is (probably) the source of your "RED" listings. Although you are not showing the dissabled sources so I cannot be sure. I'd give dollars to donughts though, that at some time you used a different (probably one of the unmarked) repository as the source for a KDE upgrade. Right now, if you were in yast and clicked Packages -> All in this list -> Update if newer... the "Blue" listings would be marked for upgrade, but nothing would happen for the "Red" packages. This is because there is a valid upgrade path for the "Blue" listings. If you were to click on the checkbox in front (to the left) of a "RED" package, it would change to a mark, indicating an upgrade, but would actually install the lower numbered version, because that is the version from the system default repo. If you select a "Red" package in the upper pane of yast, then select the versions tab in the lower pane, you will see the installed version, and the other available versions, as well as the alias you gave the repo.
i'd still like to know why yast thinks 4.6.0 is an upgrade to 4.6.4
Hopefully that clears things up. If you re-add the repo you used when you upgraded to 4.6.4 then things should look more correct. (I would also take the step of going to that repo listing and clicking the "Switch system packages" link. Some things in yast take a while to intuit, unfortunately, changing them to make things easier/clearer is not nescessarily very easy :-( see ya dh -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

The first set of version numbers is what you are running. The second is what is available in your 11.4 oss repos. This is normal. Updates will show up in blue. Cheers!
