[opensuse-kde] X does not start in RL 5, but with startx
Hi everyone, another strange thing happened to me last thursday. In the morning, my pc started with runlevel 5, I logged in and worked. When I finished work, I logged out, and then wanted shut down the pc from the greeter screen as usual. But there was no greeter screen that afternoon, just the command line. From then on, kdm does not start in runlevel 5. Strange enough, I can login as root, issue the "init 3" command, login as user, and do the "startx". X (7.6 from the distro, openSUSE 11.4) and KDE (4.6.3 from KDE:Release:46) start fine. After I read "switching to runlevel 5" at boot time, the screen goes black, a little later the nvidia logo appears, the mouse cursor (with the "background activity" symbol), and then I'm thrown back to the text screen. There are no errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The last lines read ---snip--- [ 53.345] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse" (type: MOUSE) [ 53.345] (**) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: (accel) keeping acceleration scheme 1 [ 53.345] (**) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: (accel) acceleration profile 0 [ 53.345] (**) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: (accel) acceleration factor: 2.000 [ 53.345] (**) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: (accel) acceleration threshold: 4 [ 53.345] (II) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: initialized for relative axes. [ 53.346] (II) config/udev: Adding input device ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse (/dev/input/mouse0) [ 53.346] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring) [ 53.347] (II) config/udev: Adding input device PC Speaker (/dev/input/event4) [ 53.347] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring) [ 53.496] (II) Power Button: Close [ 53.496] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" [ 53.500] (II) Power Button: Close [ 53.500] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" [ 53.505] (II) AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: Close [ 53.505] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" [ 53.515] (II) ImExPS/2 Logitech Explorer Mouse: Close [ 53.515] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" ---pins--- What about those "Power Button: Close" lines? There are no "(EE)" entries in the log, except for the standard "(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown." line. Plus Thunderbird's Enigmail AddOn does not work because it can't load the necessary agent. Neither TB nor Enigmail have been installed on thursday. The kde4-kgreeter-plugins rpm was installed on May 9, so it is not the culprit ;-) But what may be responsible? Hi everyone,
Wednesday = Wonderday. Today, everything works again. Started the pc in RL 5 as usual and the greeter appeared. And allowed me to login. I will never know what it was because I can't find errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/log/kdm.log, or /var/log/messages. Thanks for everyone who pondered silently about this problem :-) Regards, Werner -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.16 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAk3Tha8ACgkQk33Krq8b42OXRgCfQnh0vTtCYWJZ3sXf9ZYwpZwE 5AUAmgMdYBo3JXOP3+jbbiwmdLn4J8gR =RNoU -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
