Upgrading to 3.2.3 with YaST
I've seen the rpms to update KDE 3.2.2 for SuSE 9.1 to KDE 3.2.3, but I was wondering if there is a way to do it using YaST's System Update tool, like I did to upgrade to 3.2.2. I have the /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/Update_for_9.1/yast-source from one of the mirrors set up as an installation source, but System Update can't seem to find anything new to install. Any ideas? -- John Quentin Heywood heywood@speakeasy.net

Mind the case. Upper/lowercase is significant. Otherwise the directory (yast_source) is good. Beter browse to it with Konqueror and use cur&paste from the Location-toolbar to YaST.

Move the new source above the base source. I did it a few hours ago, and it just works. ;) Cheers, Leen
I was able to setup additional source. I start Yast2 and can see the updated packages. When I check on to update, it downloads and then tells me it can't find the package on the medium. Any ideas? B-) On Saturday 12 June 2004 12:18 pm, Leendert Meyer wrote:

Well? Did you do as I suggested? And here's another suggestion: try to refresh the source (Edit -> Refresh). Cheers, Leen -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. reread the source-Dir then the installer should recognize the new RPMs Andreas

Andreas, I know this behaviour from previous updates and you're right. But how do you enforce a reread? I used to delete the entry from the list and added it again. Is there an easier way? Kostas

I use Yast with the german localization, so I don't know the english menu-names, I just guess and add the german one in parenthesis. Yast -> Software -> change installationsource (Installationsquelle wechseln) ((hint: here you added the supplementary dir)) select the supplementary-Dir and use 'Edit' ( Bearbeiten ) -> 'refresh Status' (Status aktualisieren) hope this helps, Andreas (PS: no personal Mail necessary ;) I read the list)

Jeez, that's all? And I did all my 8.1 updates the hard way... thx!

why simple if there is a complex way ;)
but yes, this worked for me
Now I actually tried to do it. There is no Edit available! I am in yast->Software->Change source of installation. There is no Edit-button. I only have Add (drop down menu), Delete, Up, Down, Enable/Disable Back Abort Finish. That doent change when I select the source I would like to edit. Bummer. Big one. :-( I guess you have a newer yast (this is from SUSE 8.1). Kostas
Hi, I've tried to update also with automatic update, but the tool always seems to want to go to the following directory : ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/Update_for_9.1/yast-source/i386/update/9.1/patches/directory.3 instead of : ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/Update_for_9.1/yast-source Where do i need to change this ? Thanks in adavance, Franky. On Saturday 12 June 2004 21:01, John Quentin Heywood wrote:

Franky, Maybe I did not understand correctly what you are trying to do but it seems to me you try to do a system update in order to upgrade KDE. For upgrading the KDE packages you just need to have that directory as an installation source, enabled and above the default one and just go into 'Install and Remove Software', you'll notice that the KDE packages are now blue, since yast found newer versions available. Just click 'Next' and the packages should be upgraded. Restart KDE and voila. Cheers, Robert. On Saturday 12 June 2004 23:13, Franky Goethals wrote:

Thanks...your advice did the trick. My mistake was in using "System Update" instead of "Install or Remove Software". I had the installation source from the mirror pointed correctly at "/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source". Once I used Install or Remove, then selected Package Groups-->all, then right-clicked in the rpms pane, selected "All in This List" and "Update if newer version available." Clicked on Accept and it worked like a charm. Thanks again. -- John Quentin Heywood heywood@speakeasy.net

Hello, I had to add / after yast-source to get it to work. However, if I check on about KDE it still shows that I have KDE3.2.1 installed. Yast shows that 3.2.3 is installed. Is this normal or is something wrong? Thanks, Rich -- C. Richard Matson

I've done it this way: 1.) mirror ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/ somewhere on my fileserver, add the mirror as an installation source 2.) mirror ftp://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.1 somewhere on fileserver, add mirror as installation source 3.) copy winerack cd to fileserver, update source descriptions according to http://portal.suse.com/sdb/de/2004/02/yast_instsrc.html, add as installation source (4. build an installation source from all the rpm packages you made yourself, add as inst source in yast) then, all you need to do is start yast, go to "software", select "upgrade system" and enjoy kde 3.2.3 + all the addons from packman etc. of course, every time your mirror mails you about new files, you gotta refresh the install sources in yast accordingly. bye, [MH]

SuSe doesn't garantee KDE updates. So you can't upgrade to 3.2.3 with YOU (Yast _Online_ Update). Just download those files with wget ftp://[IP-address]/[dir] or assign the ftp location in Yast (not YOU!). (on your own risk!)
