I sent the following to the SLE list, and then discovered the new KDE list, so apologies for the crossposting. I'm getting started with SuSE and have struck a small problem. I am running V.7.3 (Pro distribution) on a dual boot system with NT4. When logged in as root the Konsole window opens, confined to a narrow window on the left of the screen, and the prompt is very difficult to read with letters squashed together. If I issue a command the response is also unreadable. Making the window full size does nothing for the text and adjusting the settings does not appear to work! If I login with my normal user login, (John) the Konsole window is quite OK and text is very readable, and yet the settings appear to be the same for root as for user. I have read the KDE Konsole instructions but I must be missing something as I can't adjust the settings to resolve this. I daresay a re-install would resolve it, and I am happy to do so. I think it's a breeze after windoze installs, although I would rather try and understand what the problem is. Any pointers appreciated. John

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but you really shouldn't ever log into X as root. Instead, log in as your regular log in, and use the command in a terminal window "su" along with the root password to change user. ("sux" if you want to run an X program with it.) Doing this will allow your system to be secure on the internet and safe from mishaps, while at the same time allowing you to run *any* program that needs a root account. (Also the default SuSE tools menu in KDE has a root window entery that allows you to do this without running su etc.; though you may not, like me, like the alternate console layout it uses.)

Reinstalls are usually unneccesary under Linux and rarely solve problems that cannot be solved another way. That having been said I did have to do this when I upgraded XFree86 from SuSE's 4.10 to SuSE's 4.20 because I was at a loss how to fix it; anyone with any pointers on how to make this upgrade smoothly are appreciated. -- The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. Joshua, Thanks for the advice here, it is appreciated. Presently I am in a steep learning curve, and while I am aware of the need to use root selectively, I am still groping my way.

Just remember - su and sux are your friends. :-) They are quite simple to use, so don't be scared to give it a try rather than running X as root; which, again, is not reccomended. There's also sudo that you may want to look into later (unlike su and sux, it requires configuration). -- "He's just a politician trying to save both his faces ..."
