Thumbnail view gone after ungraceful shutdown
All, Where should I be looking to restore the thumbnail previews in Konq for .jpg and other image files? Previously, I was able to view folders of images and see each file represented by a small version of the full image. This required some system resources, but allowed me to quickly browse large numbers of images and to select among similar and similarly named files, without opening each one, to see what was in it. Then my system (SuSE 9, KDE 3.2.0) froze and my wife had to reboot (could not get to a console for orderly shutdown). Upon restart, there was some corruption and a prompt telling me to log in as root and run "mount -n -o remount,rw /" ...... which I did. KDE came back, and most things seem to work, but now Konqueror shows image files all with the same (uninformative) camera icon. I've toggled every switch I could find in "Settings", but I can't get Konq to show image files as large-icon thumbnails anymore. What should I try next? Is there additional info that I could provide that might indicate what is broken? Thanks, /kevin

Hate to suggest the obvious (and it sounds like you have tried these ideas) but for the sake of completeness I assume that the view-viewmode->icon view menu is selected in konqueror Have you checked under the view menu (in konqueror) view->Prieview->show previews to make sure that "Images" is selected? The last thing I can suggest is to open then settings window from konqueror settings->configure konqueror In the previews->metadata tab there is a maximum filesize setting, I set this at about 6mb and still occasionally run across a large file that doesn't get a preview made. If the setting is to low then all you will see are icons rather than previews. Yes. Icon view is the whole point (for me) of viewing a directory full of image files. The setting just gives me large-icon depiction of a window/page with a turned-up lower-right corner, and a stylized camera occupying the full field of the "page". This is the icon that I formerly got only for some TIFs that didn't include thumbnails. Otherwise, I would see JPEGs and GIFs as jumbo-icon-sized previews when viewing the directory in icon view.

Yes, I have preview selected for everything except music files.

I had it set for 3MB, and it wasn't working even for files that were well under a megabyte... but I bumped it up to 6MB just to see. No improvement. While I was in there, I looked at file associations for image > jpeg (and other image types), and those included KIconEdit, Kview, KuickShow, PixiePlus Express mode, PixiePlus Image Manager, GIMP and XV. I also fiddled around with the order, placing first one then another at the top of the list. No improvement. Possibly, there is yet another setting, hidden somewhere, for "view thumbnails with...". But I can't find it. Something got corrupted, or some file got deleted when the system was frozen and needed an ungraceful shutdown. My reading in the Help and in Info and other files that I could find has not pointed me in the right direction. In the interim, I have created an Image Gallery, but this is far less convenient, and needs to be manually updated whenever I add or remove a file. Any other suggestions? Anybody? /kevin

There is an option which tells Konqueror for which protocols the preview should be used. In the german version you find this at: Einstellungen / Konqueror einrichten. There is an icon-bar on the left side and the 3rd is called "Vorschauen & Metadaten". If you select this icon, you will get a selection, where you can choose the protocols. Maybe the "local" protocols are not chosen? Regards, Michael -- ____ / / / / /__/ Michael Höhne / / / / / / mih-Hoehne@t-online.de / _____________________________________/
