[opensuse-kde] [IMPORTANT] Qt 4.5.0 will enter KDE:Qt
Hi, We're currently moving the latest stable Qt 4.4.x from KDE:Qt to KDE:Qt44. This version will also be released as an online update to openSUSE 11.1, which removes the need for having KDE:Qt enabled for most openSUSE 11.1 users. KDE:Qt will switch to Qt 4.5.0 (currently rc1) by next week. If you're building against KDE:Qt and do not want to switch to Qt 4.5, you can either: - switch your build dependency to KDE:Qt44 - remove the build dependency on KDE:Qt, and instead build against openSUSE:11.1:Update KDE:Qt46 has also been created now, but is empty. it will be populated as time permits. Thanks for the note, I've switched my KDE:/Qt repository to KDE:/Qt44. I assume this will be sufficient (Qt-wise) for getting updates to KDE 4.2.x from the KDE:/Factory:/Desktop repository? -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

When I use KDE4:Factory to get KDE 4.2 with openSUSE 11.1, will KDE:Qt44 be sufficient or will it be necessary to continue using KDE:Qt ? Regards Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

In a week or two you don't need either one of those anymore, as we'll release the latest Qt 4.4.x packages as an online update to openSUSE 11.1, and that will be good enough. The packages will be built against the released Qt version then, which removes the need for any extra KDE:Qt* repository being added. Note that this only applies to openSUSE 11.1. the Qt version on openSUSE 11.0 is too old to be usable by KDE4.2, so there nothing changes (KDE:Qt44 is the stable one, KDE:Qt will be slighly less stable, but both should in principle work). Oh, one more question, will KDE 4.2 at any time become a stable tree for openSUSE 11.1 or will it stay in KDE:factory? Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

KDE:KDE4:Factory will switch the KDE 4.3, once it enters openSUSE:Factory. I have asked on IRC if it is possible to save the latest state of KDE 4.2 in an additional repository. Stephan Binner answered that he can copy it to KDE:KDE4:KDE42. So it looks like we can stay on KDE4.2, until we feel KDE 4.3 is stable enough. IMHO, this is a good idea. I'm not sure why there is UNSTABLE, STABLE and Factory at all for something as specific as KDE? Perhaps the KDE repo should just be named as it is versioned (just like openSUSE distro repo - e.g. openSUSE_11.1) as in KDE41, KDE42, and eventually KDE43. This will remove all the confusion. Once a version becomes obsolete, simply remove the repo. Then those that have the repo configured in Yast or Smart will get an error. Then they will know that they will need to update their repo list rather than being surprised when a new major version is installed (especially those that don't monitor this mailing list). For the supported version, a symlink like "current" could be setup so that those that want to stick with the version that came with the distro wont have to worry about changing the repo to keep the current stable version. I know this has been discussed before in this ML, but I haven't been following the subject too closesly. I've been just trying to make sure that I have the right repos. :) Alvin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Malte Good to hear. Will the new url replacing http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... be http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/KDE42/Factory:/Desktop/... or some thing else? After problems with last update from KDE4.2 I leary of the current repository. I notice today it say there is another set of updated for in the repository. Are they 4.2 or is it now 4.3?
Thanks for any response, the repositories are getting confusing and maybe Alvins Idea would be less confusing. -- Russ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I think what Stephan meant on IRC was http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/KDE42:/Desktop/openSUSE... I have no promise though...

KDE 4.2. I expect there will be another anouncement before this switch.

Yes, it would reduce the number of repository switches. For QT it is done this way.Qt43, Qt44, Qt45 and simply Qt for the current one in Factory. Don't know why this doesn't work for KDE, too.
