[opensuse-kde] KDE SC 4.5.0 released, upgrade instructions
KDE SC 4.5.0 was just released and as usual we have the freshest packages for you. The packages are in KDE:Distro:Factory and related OBS projects. We expect to produce an openSUSE 11.3 respin with 4.5.x shortly. If you want to install 11.3 with 4.5.0 preinstalled right now, use the Live Image from http://home.kde.org/~kdelive. If you want to upgrade your existing openSUSE installation to KDE SC 4.5.0, follow these steps for the best experience. They assume you are using 11.3, substitute 11.2 in all URLs below if necessary. 1) Remove any old KDE:KDE4:* repositories and KDE:Qt* repositories 2) Add the repository containing 4.5.0: KDE:Distro:Factory : zypper ar -f \ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.3 \ KDF 3) Add the Extra repository (optional): zypper ar -f \ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distr... KDEExtra 4) Upgrade all packages from KDE:Distro:Factory and KDE:Extra (omit if not using): zypper dup --from KDF --from KDEExtra 5) If you are using knetworkmanager, replace it with the Network Management plasmoid due to a bug in KNM with 4.5.0 that hides all connections, before you upgrade or you may be stuck without a connection! zypper in plasmoid-networkmanagement and allow it to deinstall NetworkManager-kde4. 6) logout and login again. Please report any problems with the upgrade process here and report any packaging/integration bugs at bugzilla.novell.com, and upstream bugs at bugs.kde.org as appropriate. Should I wait until you have the openSUSE 11.3 branding packages live before I blog about upgrading to 4.5.0? I intentionally didn't include any steps in my original post[0] on omgsuse for fear of sending users down an untested path. If things are good enough right now, I can have something up tomorrow for upgrading to 4.5.0 with upstream branding [0] http://omgsuse.com/content/kde-hits-turbo-button-45 Cheers, -R. I commented on your 4.5.0 article with a link to the first mail in $SUBJECT for the adventurous. The packages themselves are pretty well tested, the upgrade path is not - I'd hold off a couple of days in case anything nasty comes up, but then I think the steps should be safe enough. As in, safer than using openSUSE Factory, not as safe as sticking with a release. It is a .0 after all. E.g.: where's the desktop window gone? (Sorry for not conforming to the KDE nomenclature of the day: I mean the window, that presented my desktop icons after upgrade from KDE 3) BTW, just by moving the mouse onto the taskbar area (kicker in KDE3), my netbook froze hard (no sshing from outside possible). I did a remote desktop session once with krfb. Now krfb is started on every login. If krfb is running via session mgmt, I would expect it to show some kind of tray icon, where I can get rid of it from the UI. I'm going to kill this process now... If the folder view widget has somehow disappeared, adding it again is easy. Right click desktop -> Add widgets -> Folder View ... configure the folder view to show ~/Desktop/ , I'm afraid it'll default to home.
BTW, just by moving the mouse onto the taskbar area (kicker in KDE3), my netbook froze hard (no sshing from outside possible).
Using 11.3? Netbook sounds like intel gfx - and the driver is known to suck ass on 11.3. Disable effects or consider experimenting with disabling KMS and switching to the intel legacy driver. Or you may even want to experiment with a newer kernel, depending on how badly you want non-crashy 3d :-(

alt+f2 -> 'kquitapp krfb' - would probably be the cleanest way to stop it, but simply killing it prolly wouldn't do any harm. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

-- Will Stephenson, KDE Developer, openSUSE Boosters Team SUSE LINUX Products GmbH - Nürnberg - AG Nürnberg - HRB 16746 - GF: Markus Rex Just updated to KDE 4.5.0 yesterday and all went fairly well. Only found two problems and no solutions yet.
1. KMyMoney4 (3.98.1) from suse repos. Installed fine, check works but went to reconcile it and it will not work correctly. If I click a check to get the C in the reconcile routine, the first one appears Ok, entering the next one clears the first one. Since This came from the SUSE repo do I report it at bugzilla or KDE Bug system? 2. When I minimize an application it dissappears instead of showing up on panel. It is still running according to sys monitor but I have bnot found away to get it back. Overall things are working great. -- upscope -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like normal upstream problem to me, so please report there.

Please make sure you have a task switcher applet in the panel (or however it is called, use fuzzy guessing ;-) ) Regards, Karsten -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
So far, except for it losing a bunch of my shortcuts (konsole shortcuts, at least), the only _really_ annoying issue I've found with 4.5.0 is that I can't save python files without an error message popping up: The filter/check plugin 'python-encoding' could not be found, still continue saving of <pathname elided> With a "Save Nevertheless" and "Cancel" set of buttons. Oh, and I still have icon corruption with nouveau (and the black and white icons are suboptimal, IMO). 2010/8/10 Karsten König <remur@gmx.net>:

Someone in the konsole team decided to standardise the shortcuts around browser shortcut conventions, apparently. A warning and an option to keep the old scheme would be ahve been nice, but you can always change ctrl-shift-n back to 'open new tab'.
, the only really annoying issue I've found with 4.5.0 is that I can't save python files without an error message popping up:
The filter/check plugin 'python-encoding' could not be found, still continue saving of <pathname elided>
With a "Save Nevertheless" and "Cancel" set of buttons.
Upstream kate let this bug slip through into 4.5.0 and just fixed it. The interesting question is, can the "presave-postdialog python-encoding" bit be present in ~/.kde4/share/config/katemoderc, which requires a kconf_update script to go in and remove it for each user, or is it only in /usr/share/kde4/config/katemoderc installed by kdelibs4? See below. You can fix it temporarily by making the change in the diff to local and system katemoderc files. # svn log -v -r1160713 svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/KDE/4.5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ r1160713 | mwolff | 2010-08-08 23:15:26 +0200 (Sun, 08 Aug 2010) | 10 lines Changed paths: M /branches/KDE/4.5/kdelibs/kate/data/katemoderc The python-encoding kate plugin isn't built anymore in 4.5 but it's still in the default config. This causes kate to display an error message whenever saving a python file because it can't find the plugin. So python-encoding should removed from katemoderc in 4.5. In trunk it's enabled again (but disabled by default): http://websvn.kde.org/?view=revision&revision=1145919 Review Request: http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/4935 Thanks to Felix Geyer for the patch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ # svn di -c1160713 svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/KDE/4.5 Index: kdelibs/kate/data/katemoderc =================================================================== --- kdelibs/kate/data/katemoderc (revision 1160712) +++ kdelibs/kate/data/katemoderc (revision 1160713) @@ -1,5 +1,5 @@ [Python] -Variables=kate: presave-postdialog python-encoding; indent-mode python; +Variables=kate: indent-mode python; [Makefile] Variables=kate: tab-width 8; indent-width 8; replace-tabs off; replace-tabs- save off;

Just not your taste, or do you see it as a general problem? If the former, the tray icon theming is now part of the Plasma theme so they can be replaced without replacing the whole icon theme. Yes, it needs a kconf_update to fix this properly. The feedback *we* (the Plasma team) got does clearly _not_ agree. I've seen many people go "Ooh, sexy!", and in total 2 people (including you) who don't like it so much. Given that people explain much more easily if they dislike something, and hardly ever give feedback if they like something, I consider the monochrome system tray One Big Success. Delete the monochrome icons that the system tray widget substitutes for those set by the apps using the tray, and the colourful originals will be used instead (I know because I mispackaged these in openSUSE and discovered the fallback behaviour). The standard location for them is `kde4-config --prefix`/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/icons/ (stolen from Will, http://lwn.net/Articles/399416/ ) -- sebas http://www.kde.org | http://vizZzion.org | GPG Key ID: 9119 0EF9 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Deleting the icons is a very short-term solution. As soon as kdebase4-runtime is replaced, the icons will be back. One could subdivide kdebase4-runtime further and make the system tray icons a replaceable capability provided by different packages, but it's as much work as cobbling a few icons into a theme, much more risky to the integrity of the desktop, and redundant when there is already a mechanism for it. The minimal amount of work would be to branch kdebase4-runtime in the OBS, delete these icons in your branch's specfile %install, and register the resulting repo with a higher priority than KDF, so your hacked version is preferred. -- Will Stephenson, KDE Developer, openSUSE Boosters Team SUSE LINUX Products GmbH - Nürnberg - AG Nürnberg - HRB 16746 - GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
One more thing I note is that there is a *lot* of noise in .xsession-errors: buildsycoca4(8297)/kdecore (services) KServicePrivate::init: The desktop entry file "/usr/share/applications/YaST2/vm-install.desktop" has Type= "Application" but also has a X-KDE-Library key. I'm trying to understand the issue and failing (have used Klipper for the last 10 years). It seems to me that the act of selecting something prior to "copy" will necessarily set Selection before "copy" sets Clipboard. Yes. Sorry for the delay! I'm not ruling out other issues, but one that is very easy to replicate is this: 1. open konsole and a web browser 2. display in konsole some text that includes a URL 3. when you move the mouse over the URL, it becomes underlined. 4. while the URL is underlined, right-click and choose "Copy Link Address" This is where things differ. Previously, "Copy Link Address" would copy to both the clipboard and the X selection. Now it only copies to the clipboard. Incidentally, enabling the klipper 'sync' behavior drove me nuts after about 5 minutes (I'm used to having a clipboard *and* an X selection buffer, and treating them differently), so using that functionality is out for me. -- Jon -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I've tried to reproduce this with a clean 11.3 in a VM and can't. I prepended 0) quit Klipper to your steps. I took care to right click the underlined URL rather than drag-selecting it, of course. I had a look at the Klipper source code to make sure that it did not recently change how it actually puts the text into the clipboard, and since 2007 it has always just called QClipboard::setText(url); without the optional mode argument that controls which buffer is used, so it goes only to Clipboard. Since we are using the same Qt version as 11.3, that rules out a bugfix in QClipboard. What is interesting is that I tried the same RMB on URL, Copy Link Location in Konqueror, and that *does* set both Selection and Clipboard explicitly, see lines 814 and 818 here: http://lxr.kde.org/source/KDE/kdelibs/khtml/khtml_ext.cpp?v=4.4-branch As you can see that's the KDE 4.4. code (and the two calls are there since much longer), so am I actually right in comparing 4.4 and 4.5's behaviour? Simply *selecting* text populates the X selection. However, choosing "copy" seems to *clear* the X selection (without actually de-selecting any text). I made the klipper preferences change, above, but again, *why* it changed after all this time is a surprise. -- Jon -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Switch is an overloaded term. Do you mean: 1.1) Ctrl-tab (+shift to go back) keyboard shortcut (old KDE 2/3 style shortcut, not present by default in KDE 4)* 1.2) "Switch one desktop [up|down|to the left|to the right]" keyboard shortcut* 1.3) Ctrl-F1 etc keyboard shortcuts 2.1) Click pager widget 2.2) Mouse wheel on pager widget 3) Mouse wheel on desktop window 4) Dragging window to screen edge* 5) Pushing on screen edge with the pointer.* 6) Activate Desktop Cube manually, rotate, deactivate* * not enabled by default in case people think we are on crack. Phew, that's better. I'm still using KDE 3.x and I find it annoying that I have to `select/copy' in order to populate X's buffer. But I understand your point. Upstream kate let this bug slip through into 4.5.0 and just fixed it. The interesting question is, can the "presave-postdialog python-encoding" bit be present in ~/.kde4/share/config/katemoderc, which requires a kconf_update script to go in and remove it for each user, or is it only in /usr/share/kde4/config/katemoderc installed by kdelibs4? See below. You can fix it temporarily by making the change in the diff to local and system katemoderc files.
I have 2 questions and another bug report: 1. Has the above been fixed? 2. Where should I be filing bugs? Sounds like normal upstream problem to me, so please report there.

Actually, I wasn't aware that I was this package's maintainer :P I mean, I could probably do this - I'm using KMyMoney myself and building packages anyway... At the moment, I've got two projects involving KMyMoney: - home:NicoK:banking containing the old KDE3 KMyMoney with KBanking plugin to access HBCI online accounts - home:NicoK:banking4 with the new KMyMoney4 (latest beta) and the libraries it needs. Unfortunately the latest beta of KMyMoney4 doesn't work with the latest RCs of aqbanking and gwenhywfar. I saw some changes in the latest svn but haven't tried it yet. KMyMoney4.5 however is scheduled for Aug 16th (if this is still up-to-date), so I'd suggest to wait until then for migration. I'll continue updating the versions in my repositories and could push it to KDE:Extra once it is final and it works together, i.e. KMyMoney4 and online banking. Nico

My main concern is online banking - KMyMoney4 itself works (don't know whether it even needs those libs then) - the old gwenhywfar and aqbanking libraries however still rely on QT3 so I doubt they work together. Anyway, I installed KMyMoney4 from the Community repo once to try it out and there was no online banking which is why I set up my repos to test with newer libraries. Also I expect aqbanking and gwenhywfar to be released when kmymoney 4.5 is released :P (haven't read any release plan though since there is none I am aware of) that's what I read...

btw: you should probably add some more info about the new version, e.g. I extracted the following from the release notes: + first stable release for KDE platform 4 + better documentation + improved usability of the online banking features + uses KWallet to store online banking passwords + the consistency check runs automatically before saving your data, it now checks for a wider range of problems, and it automatically corrects many of them. at least the more important parts should be noted (better documentation for example is probably not important to the user - depends on which documentation they were referring to...)

Those are the versions I identified so far: BuildRequires: cmake >= 2.6.4 BuildRequires: aqbanking-devel >= 4.2.4 aqbanking-qt4 >= 4.2.4 (also this must be <= 4.99.8) BuildRequires: libical-devel >= 0.33 BuildRequires: gwenhywfar-devel >= 3.10.1

as everything kde3 was renamed to kde3-***, I'd just do that here, too -> maybe someone using kde4 still wants to rely on the old kmymoney without having to check everytime he's making an update of all his (other) packages... -> I'll rename it in my branch within the next few days and commit a sr

that's what I though/expected, too :P (will test within the next few days though) Nico

Hi Nico
Stephan Kleine (bitshuffler) has also made a KMyMoney4 package today - I guess he didn't read this thread. Can you have a look at SR 45731 (osc show -d 45731) since you are experienced in building KMyMoney4 and see if there are any improvements which your package and Stephan's can share when it is submitted to KDE:Distro:Factory? He is using the aqbanking and gwenhywar packages from Gnome:Apps IIUC.
that message came just about 2 hours too late as I was re-organising my projects in order to integrate kmymoney4 with the latest stable aqbanking and gwenhywfar libraries and just finished.
btw: seems I was wrong when I said that the new kmymoney didn't work with the old aqbanking and gwenhywfar packages... haven't done functional tests yet though
the osc command you gave me didn't work though (osc 0.128: unknown command: 'show') but I had a look into his home:bitshuffler:branches:KDE:Distro:Factory repository - as far as I can see, he based his package on the old kmymoney package -
I added the old .changes file, the spec was written from scratch since it made more sense IMHO.
btw: you should probably add some more info about the new version, e.g.
FWIW, the command is "osc rq show 45731"
the kmymoney4 package that was in KDE:Community however splits off some of its libraries (don't know the preferred method here)
IMHO splitting out those libs makes no sense since they aren't "public" as in don't get used by other stuff.
makes sense...
- his packaging style is however "cleaner" although some of the BuildRequires could receive version information
Thanks. I avoided hard coding any version information since it creates less work on the long run. Feel free to suggest what you don't like.
Those are the versions I identified so far: BuildRequires: cmake >= 2.6.4 BuildRequires: aqbanking-devel >= 4.2.4 aqbanking-qt4 >= 4.2.4 (also this must be <= 4.99.8) BuildRequires: libical-devel >= 0.33 BuildRequires: gwenhywfar-devel >= 3.10.1
- we should also decide on the package's name - kmymoney4 or kmymoney (the old kmymoney in KDE:KDE3 needs to be renamed to kde3-kmymoney anyway)
IMHO the name should be plain kmymoney since that is the name of the project and I doubt anyone would install the KDE 3 & 4 one in parallel and KDE 3 is legacy. Also I just had it with those version perfixes. If you think the name should be different then the KDE 3 version should be renamed to kmymoney3.
as everything kde3 was renamed to kde3-***, I'd just do that here, too -> maybe someone using kde4 still wants to rely on the old kmymoney without having to check everytime he's making an update of all his (other) packages... -> I'll rename it in my branch within the next few days and commit a sr

I just did a quick test with my package that was build with kbanking plugin but I cannot update my online banking accounts (from a converted kmymoney3 file) - the menu item is deactivated - I can only remove an account mapping but can not create new ones. Also in the settings I do not see any plugins listed under "plugins" - can you tell me whether this is also the case with your package? (can't test more right now) Nico

yes, I thought we agreed on this - was asking myself why your package hasn't made it yet The only changes I'd like you to apply to your package have been noted above, i.e. a bit more info in the .changes and added BuildRequires - Possibly you should also add some Requires, e.g. if KMyMoney explicitly requires aqbanking
= 4.2.4 at build time, it will probably not work wit 4.2.3 but the auto- requires will probably only require the .so* files which will have the same name in both(?). Explicit Requires for this will save some troubles with users having older aqbanking etc installed - they'll have to update and will get a notice about that.
You could add this and submit a new SR or we could add it at a later time, I'd prefer the first but that's not my decision to take :P -> Will?

1) Remove any old KDE:KDE4:* repositories and KDE:Qt* repositories
2) Add the repository containing 4.5.0: KDE:Distro:Factory :
zypper ar -f \ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.3 \ KDF
3) Add the Extra repository (optional):
zypper ar -f \ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distr... KDEExtra
4) Upgrade all packages from KDE:Distro:Factory and KDE:Extra (omit if not using):
zypper dup --from KDF --from KDEExtra
5) If you are using knetworkmanager, replace it with the Network Management plasmoid due to a bug in KNM with 4.5.0 that hides all connections, before you upgrade or you may be stuck without a connection!
zypper in plasmoid-networkmanagement
and allow it to deinstall NetworkManager-kde4.
6) logout and login again.
Please report any problems with the upgrade process here and report any packaging/integration bugs at bugzilla.novell.com, and upstream bugs at bugs.kde.org as appropriate.

the startkde script (accidentally?) sets MALLOC_CHECK_ to 3 which (among potentially slowing down any program) prevents eclipse from working correctly (see https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=320487 - I agree however that this should be their fault). Anyway, the comments in startkde suggest that this should not have been enabled in the first place for a 'release'. I filed a bug at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=247398 but I thought everyone here should know (potentially the packages could be updated, too, if setting MALLOC_CHECK_ really was a mistake) Regards Nico
