I have the feeling that the encoding errors are more when I restart the computer with the applications left open.

Any idea what this could be and how to debug/fix this?

I think you ran into this bug: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=930684 I reported this some time ago but maybe wrongly thought it was a firefox problem.
