[opensuse-kde] Mailbox vs Maildirectory
Hi, Running 10.2 with Kmail 1.9.5 I have always saved email messages from past versions of SuSE. I now have an odd mix of Mailbox & Mail Directories. (About 100 under the local directory) Would like to convert them all to be the same. Don't know which I should use. What are the pro's and con's of either type? Hi, Personally, I prefer maildir. In maildir, each mail is stored in a separate file, increasing the read time of the folder at first, but reducing read time of each mail. Also in KMail there are index files for each folder, eliminating the initial delay. That is why maildir is the default choice there. It is also considered the "modern" one. Have in mind that there is currently no way to convert a folder from one format to the other. The way to do this is to create a new folder in the destination format and move all the messages from the old to the new one. -- Blade hails you... There are utilities that will. And "mutt" will read one and write to the other, mbox<-->maildir<--->mmdf<-->mh -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Space overhead with maildir is excessive to my way of thinking. I keep voluminous email archives and if each of those messages was a separate file, I probably would not be able to use the default file system inode allocation ratio. One thing I miss from NTFS under Windows is the ability to compress individual files. I used to do this with older mailboxes.
