[opensuse-kde] KDE 4.3.x in its own repo
Hello, Does anyone know when/if a KDE_43 repository will be made for KDE 4.3.x? I currently use KDE_42[1] and would like to use KDE 4.3.x. I have heard from friends and colleagues that KDE 4.3.x is fairly stable now. However, I see the only repo for KDE 4.3.x is in Factory. I used to use Factory but switch to KDE_42 to avoid any surprises when 4.3 first started. I assume that eventually, KDE 4.4 (which AFAIK is in UNSTABLE) will make it's way into Factory. At least 4.3.1 will appear in STABLE after November 12. Between now and November 12 there shouldn't be many surprises in Factory with feature freeze and such. Whether an additional special 4.3.x repo with 4.3.2 and beyond will be created is not yet final I guess, but around the time of 4.3.2 release, I guess is the latest to make a final decision. Personally I hope such a repo can be avoided :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for info. Then it should be safe for me to switch back over to Factory so I get get some 4.3 goodness. Just as an aside, I like the idea of a KDE_43 repo only because you know that it will only ever stay within the 4.3.x branch. But I can also see that having even more repos would make things that much more confusing. For now, I will stick to where the wiki[1] says the KDE versions are located. Many thanks, Alvin [1] http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Repositories -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
Factory really is the current KDE 4.3.x release. I assume that they will make a KDE_43 repository when 4.4 goes into factory. On Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 9:25 AM, Alvin Beach <alvinbeach@gmail.com> wrote:

Why would there be a KDE 4.3 repo, if STABLE contains KDE 4.3 as soon as openSUSE 11.2 is released? If you want to use KDE 4.3 until then, use KDE4:Factory and just do not update everytime you could. That way you will get a 4.3 repo without causing any more work. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I think what people actually ask for is a better undestandable way of naming convention... "STABLE" does not suggest what version is in there, whereas "KDE_43" is clearly understandable... STABLE does not stand for a specific KDE version but for whatever version is shipped with openSUSE, having a repo for every KDE version is too much waste of space and resources in general. As an example, what should be done with :KDE42 after openSUSE 11.2 is released, should it stay forever or can it be removed? If it was removed, people would have to change their repos, if users have STABLE in their repo-list they do not have to change anything. And AFAIR most people did not want to update as often as Factory allows to. I assume most openSUSE users can read and hence they will find http://www.google.de/search?q=opensuse+kde. They would have to find some page with the repo name on it anyway, since nobody just knows the whole URL or whether it ends with KDE43 or KDE_43 or KDE-43 etc. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, exactly that is the problem.
having a repo for every KDE version is too much waste of space and resources in general.
Having a STABLE directory with a 4.0 or 4.1 inside is more like a waste of space in my eyes. Those versions were never considered to be stable :-p

KDE42 is a great repository for 11.0 and 11.1, and maybe for SLES11 too. I see no need to provide KDE42 for 11.2.
I assume most openSUSE users can read and hence they will find http://www.google.de/search?q=opensuse+kde. They would have to find some page with the repo name on it anyway, since nobody just knows the whole URL or whether it ends with KDE43 or KDE_43 or KDE-43 etc.
I will never find "http://www.google.de/search?q=opensuse+kde" since I never use google. So I obviously can't read, can I? Why on earth shoould I use a search machine to locate a KDE repo for openSUSE when I know that those repositories are located in http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/ Oh, I see, I am nobody, since I remember the URL. And I even remember that the base repo is KDE:/42, whereas additional repos use KDE_42 in their names :-) But why on earth should I read a long description what is hidden behind STABLE, UNSTABLE, and FACTORY, especially when this changes all few months? I'm using 11.1 now, and I do not use KDE_STABLE, because 4.1 is unusable in my eyes - YMMV, of course. I cannot use FACTORY, since here I have 4.3 - same with UNSTABLE. For me as a rare user of KDE 4.2 (I prefer 3.5.10 because of the usability) KDE42 is the best idea since the splitting up of KDE repositories ;-) Regards, Werner -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

So if people already know the URL and can read, they just have to read the version of the packages in a repo and that's it. Is that really that hard? Or are you just reluctant to spend a minute on that while demanding more time from others to set-up repo xy? STABLE, Factory and UNSTABLE exist because that's what the openSUSE resources can provide, i.e. one for testing patches that will be officially supplied via the update repo, one for the version that is going to be in the next openSUSE release, i.e. the version openSUSE devs are working on and one repo that does not get any attention but an update very few weeks. Naming any of those with a KDE version does not make sense because their version changes and duplication is a real waste of space. If you want more repos, gather the resources that are needed and go ahead.
But why on earth should I read a long description what is hidden behind STABLE, UNSTABLE, and FACTORY, especially when this changes all few months?
A new openSUSE version comes out every few months then.

If it is such a good idea I am sure there will be people that spend their free time on creating such a repo for any other version. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

What perhaps could be added are "services" (http://duncan.mac-vicar.com/blog/archives/351) that would map users always to the correct repo. An "upstream_latest_stable_kde" (with a better name) service could have been used to move users from Factory to KDE:42 and then back to Factory automatically. If an user wanted only KDE 4.2 he would have been redirected from Factory to KDE:42 and, when 11.2 is released, to STABLE with a "kde_42" service. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
