[opensuse-kde] Question about the modified KDE_VERSION_STRING in openSUSE
Hi, Could someone give me a short explanation why openSUSE uses modified KDE_VERSION_STRING like "4.10.2 release 1" ? I assume there must be valid points behind that decision, but I just don't know yet :) I'm asking because this modified KDE_VERSION_STRING causes some annoyance in bugs.kde.org to a few KDE applications(konqueror, kwin, gwenview, plasma-desktop, etc ) using KDE_VERSION_STRING as their version strings : 1). crash reports created by Dr.Konqi do not have the "Version" field correctly filled, because the version string in bugs.kde.org is like "4.10.5" while the version string in openSUSE installation is like "4.10.5 release 1". All such reports have the useless "unspecified" value in the "Version" field. That introduces information loss, and extra time is wasted for developers/triagers to fill the "Version" field manually. 2). Due to the version string mismatching, bugs.kde.org also fails to reject crash reports from outdated KDE installation (like KDE SC 4.7.x) as it should have done. I guess I could add some hack in Dr.Konqi to work around this problem, but I don't think that is the right solution. Maybe we can figure out a proper solution to make both sides happy, so here comes this mail . I think, I introduced that years ago to be able to differ to our KDE shipments. Even though there is only one 4.10.5 release for example, we may have backported plenty of bugfixes or added something else. So we wanted also to have an additional seperator. it was also because people cryied for the latest version and we wanted to show that we backported stuff even though the KDE project itself did not cared for another release for the old branch (what is your good right of course :) Sorry, if that is causing problems at your side, but I am not aware that there was a different option to set which also becomes user visible. But again, this was maybe 8 or 10 years ago :) bye adrian

Given the issues that can cause upstream, I would vote for removing this change to KDE_VERSION_STRING. Team, your opinion? As we have changed the process of handling KDE {Platform, Workspaces, Applications} releases during these years, I wager this is no longer needed. This is indeed a change that became obsolete during the years. We are now more stricter following the upstream release schedules and we are trying to upstream our patches as much as possible. Therefore we should stick to the upstream KDE_VERSION_STRING. I already made the change in KDE:Distro:Factory and have submitted it to Factory.
