The miraculously multiplying kdeinit
My KDE 3.1 is getting slower and slower while working on it. After an average 4 hours of work today, which includes usage of KMail, KAudioCrator, Konqueror, OpenOffice, and a dozen Konsoles, ps -A returns running kdeinstances by the dozen (output below). Now already on startup (which lately takes forever and a day, with *no* programs to restore!) I have quite a few instances of kdeinit running (about 3 times as much as on my virgin debian w/KDE 3.0.4), but nothing compared to what I am looking at, at the end of the day... Any idea on what is causing this, or how to stop it? Kostas, Have you tried deleting the contents of /tmp yet? Everything will be rebuilt in /tmp, so don't worry. Things might be slow at first starting them, but it will right itself quickly. What about renaming your /home/kostas/.kde directory and letting KDE create you a new one. Yes, your settings will be gone, but you can bring them back later a few at a time to see what the rogue is that is causing this anomally! That was a long list of things, so I can understand it taking up your system. You might want to run either ksim or gkrellm also to watch the indicaters on those programs. I think the main culprit is Konqueror. Opening an instance can leave up to 4 kdeinit processes behind. As I was also running KNewsTicker, I assume it uses some part of the Konqueror to fetch the news feeds regularly, so that might leave a lot of processes running... I now removed it. I deleted the contents of temp, but didn't see any change in behaviour. I renamed .kde and of course session restore is much faster now. I see that I had a lot of things customized. I now customized only the basic font so I can see Greek, and put a nice Wallpaper. Much more trimmed down. Maybe better this way. However the behaviour of Konqueror has not changed. It still leaves running processes behind after closing. A bug? Kostas

I hate to do the "me too" thing, but I'm having the same problem with kdeinit and it is definately associated with Konqueror. So you are not alone. I even tried setting up a new user to confirm that it was not a setting in my ~/.kde path not playing the game correctly. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

First off - noticed the mention of kNewsticker, I had some wierd behaviours that I found were associated w/ this program. (I can't remember just what they were but I'd suggest trying to do without it for awhile and see if that helps. Second - I leave a few web sites open in konq all the time, a couple of them use the nsplugin viewer and in at least one of them the viewer will use 20 to 30% of my cpu time (for no reason, I don't even have the window open). Every time I log back in I wait a couple of minutes for things to settle down, then, I run kdeSystemGuard, click on user % acouple of times to find out what is using cpu time on my freshly logged in machine, and usually end up killing 1 instance of nspluginviewer which is wasting cpu cycles. third - occasionally I've tried to start an instance of konq (or another prog) but no window opens, If you don't kill these somehow then they re-start when you log back in. You could try closing all of your active applets and programs (if they ask if you want to start them the next time you log in choose yes if thats what you want. Then run kdeSystemGuard and kill all remaining insytances of konqueror and nspluginviewer. There are alot of other things you can kill as well but Its better to work through things slowly. Log out (choose save settings if available, my setup saves settings every time I log out), then log back in and use top or kdeSystemGuard to see whats going on. Hope that helps -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

Kostas & Graham, I just cannot duplicate this process problem. I am running Konq, downloading files, while reading email as well as a few other things and I am not, have not experienced this problem with runaway kdeinit processes. Don't know what kernels you are running or even if that would have anything to do with it. I am guessing it is more to do with KDE than anything though. Kostas, did you remove any DCOP or MCOP in your home directory as well? Maybe a clean start on all of them will help. You may, as David suggested, have a rogue program causing this too, so shutdown some things you run normally to see if it clears up. Sorry for the late reply. I had lost your original reply message. No, I don't have DCOP or MCOP at all in my ~/. I have in fact SuSE8.1 Pro installed from DVD and put KDE 3.1 (from SuSE) on top of it. I have a lot of software on hard disk in order to have a look at it. But constantly I am only running KMail and Konqueror, and KHelp and Konsole most of the time. This is enough to have by the end of the day tens of useless kdeinit running. I checked with KSim, but I don't see any actual runaway process that munches up 100% CPU time, just a whole bunch of kdeinits. Slowdown has happened only a few times after heavy usage only, maybe there was a runaway process, but I haven't checked. Maybe it was only the tons of kdeinit that ate up scheduler time doing nothing... I have seen that KDE 3.1.1 was released yesterday. I'll try to update as soon as SuSE has put the rpms up. Kostas
