[opensuse-kde] Icons different types
facts: OS: Linux 3.1.0-1.2-desktop x86_64 System: openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64) KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5" I've organised my desktop as 4 Folderview desktops each with own dekstopfolder. On this desktop I recognize 2 types of icons. Type 1 with the + sign in the upper left corner. This icons are in the desktopfolder and most of them have a picture and some not. Initially they all have a icon with exclamationmark and some of them turn blank after confirmation. Type 2 with bar on the right side of the icon with a resize, rotate, wrench and X. This icons I can't find in the desktopfolder. Question: Is there some documentation this iconstuff? Where are the type 2 icons stored ? Why can I not place pics on some type 1 icons? These icons are links in the traditional sense... you can create them by adding them to your /home/$USER/Desktop directory, create them by drag/drop in the Desktop folder, define them as a Link to Application, or 3rd party apps can create them.

They won't be in your Desktop folder.. they are not icons in the traditional sense as you are thinking... they are widgets that link to applications. The clue is in how they look and where they "live". You won't find widgets like this in your desktop folder, but they can live elsewhere on your desktop. These are not created by 3rd party app installs etc.

Start here maybe? http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-workspace/plasma-desktop/index.html
Where are the type 2 icons stored ?
They are plasma objects/widgets. What are you looking for when you want to find where they are "stored"? You can see the widget config by looking into the .kde directory at the various rc files there.
Why can I not place pics on some type 1 icons?
Probably because they are owned by root? Icons that you create by drag/drop linking inherit the icon settings of the original app... if that app does not have an icon defined, you will get a generic icon. You cannot change that icon as user (in my experience). If you define a new Link to Application, and manually link it to the app, you can define your own icons.
